Job Description Performs EEG studies on patients including standard, ambulatory, video and special electroencephalographic (EEG) procedures. Qualifications + HS/GED + Successful completion of an educational program for EEG or Sleep Technologist accredited by the AMA Committee on Allied Health Education and Accreditation. + One year in hospital EEG experience + R.EEG.T Certification by ABRET - preferred not required. Non-Bargaining Unit, R41 - Neurology R41 - WST, Mount Sinai West Responsibilities 1) Responsible for all EEG recordings: Awake, asleep, bedside and B.D. protocol video EEGs. 2) Verifies the identity of the patient before test/procedure. Explains the procedure and equipment to patient clearly, Answers inquiries and reassures patient before and during test in order to obtain the patient's cooperation for the best performance of the test. Provides for patient privacy at all times. 3) Summarizes the patient's neurologic status and clinical history from the chart or other knowledgeable persons. Explains in detail the recording procedures to the patient and family members present. Views chart for use of anticonvulsive meds and consults family or caregiver. 4) Adapts methods and instrumentation, to make patient feel calm and comfortable during testing to obtain optional results, the best EEG findings, and an EEG record free of artifacts. 5) Measures head appropriately, places electrodes properly and checks their integrity. Recognizes artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them. 6) Appropriately uses activating procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation and sleep. Documents relevant patient history, events and medications in the recordings as per departmental guidelines. 7) Upon completion of test, removes electrodes, gels, residue from scalp and cleans patient's head/hair. Keeps EEG room clean and neat at all times. Cleans and disinfects equipment. 8) Writes all clinical observations during seizures and other patient emergency situations. Maintains the EEG database, clips, prunes, archives EEG records. 9) Logs and records complete patient diagnoses, technician report, stamps records and places in reading room. 10) Insures electrical safety of the patient at all times, performs maintenance and minor repairs of the equipment for use, and reports problems to the Supervisor. 11) Acts as a resource to residents, physicians and other technicians, providing assistance and advise as necessary. 12) Participates in conferences, technical meetings, and other educational activities when possible.
