Physician Asstistant (Mental Health)

Summary This Physician Assistant position serves the Central Texas Mental Health and Behavioral Medicine Service and is located at the Doris Miller VA Medical Center - 4800 Memorial Dr., Waco, TX 76711 Responsibilities The Psychiatry Physician Assistant will be responsible for the primary psychiatric needs of patients in the Mental Health Clinic where assigned. Duties will include, but are not limited to: Provide psychiatric care and evaluation for outpatients in the Mental Health Clinic. The PA may perform the following duties: Conduct initial psychiatric evaluations, including initial assessment interviews, lab, imaging, medication, and psychotherapy consultation orders, aftercare plans and follow up visits. Following the initial evaluation, the PA will provide appropriate follow up care including reassessments of diagnoses and conditions, medication adjustments, and any further tests or consults indicated. Provide mental health education/counseling and brief therapy of pt's and their families. Perform examinations and screening scales (such as CSSRS, CSRE, PHQ-9, and AIMS) Ordering appropriate laboratory tests, imaging studies, EKGs (electrocardiograms), and similar non-invasive tests. Prescribing medication as appropriate. Providing education and counseling of the patient and patent's family in preventative care, psychiatric conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and medication. Ordering appropriate medical equipment. Recording notes on all procedures performed for which the PA is responsible. Perform treatment planning in an outpatient setting Participates in departmental, care line, or program work groups or committees for various professional, facility or VA needs. Performs academic didactic or clinical teaching, lectures, or presentations as needed. The psychiatric physician assistant may participate in clinical research studies and/or participation in regional and national meetings for the advancement of psychiatry and continuing medical education requirements.
