About the PositionWho can apply: Agency Only (KDHE)Classified/Unclassified Service:UnclassifiedFull-Time/Part-Time:Part-Time, the position is allowed up to 999 hours per year maxRegular/Temporary:TemporaryWork Schedule:Flexible,Monday-FridayEligible to Receive Benefits:NoVeterans' Preference Eligible:YesSponsorship:KDHE does not provide sponsorship for this pensation:Hourly Pay Range:$15.03Internship Summary & ResponsibilitiesInternship Project Duties:The internship position (K0241583)The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is seeking a Health Section Lab Intern to join our Internship Program in the Kansas Health and Environmental Laboratories located in Topeka.This intern will primarily assist Health Section staff with moderate complexity laboratory tasks and will rotate through the four Health Units (Newborn Screening, Clinical Microbiology, Virology/Serology, and Molecular Diagnostics).Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Intern will provide support to KDHE scientists. Intern will assist with maintaining laboratory equipment according to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Intern will provide support to Unit managers and Section Chief as tern will also assist other laboratory sections as needed.These sections include Safety and Security, Quality Assurance, Environment, Laboratory Operations.This will provide the intern with a well-rounded picture of KHEL and also help ensure KHEL operational needs are being met.Learn more at: Laboratories | KDHE, KSQualificationsEducation: Currently engaged in a college program/course of study toward a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, environmental science, chemistry, or biology.Licensing & Certification:Valid Driver's License - Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver's license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.Minimum Qualifications: Currently engaged in a college program/course of study toward a bachelor’s degree in natural sciences, environmental science, chemistry, or tern should be able work in a variety of weather conditions, navigate rugged or slippery terrain, and lift 25 lbs.Data management, computer skills and customer service skills.Ability to follow directions and work independently.Ability to work well with others.Ability to communicate in writing and in personal interactions.Preferred Qualifications: Able to take initiative and be motivated to help other scientists.Proofreading, editing, attention to detail.Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access.Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: State of Kansas Tax Clearance Certificate. The successful applicant (even non-residents) must obtain a valid Kansas Certificate of Tax Clearance by accessing the Kansas Department of Revenue's website within 10 days of the date the applicant has been offered the employment position. A Tax Clearance is a comprehensive tax account review to determine and ensure that an individual's account is compliant with all primary Kansas Tax Laws. A Tax Clearance expires every 90 days.
