Start a career with us today!The general role of the Fiber Sensing Installation Technician - Fiber Optics is to serve as an on-site resource to oversee the proper installation of fiber optic cable for a variety of purposes such as pipeline monitoring. The Fiber Sensing Installation Technician is also responsible for terminating, splicing, documenting, and testing fiber optic cables with an end goal of meeting customer needs and providing maximum operating efficiency. The work performed will be on active construction sites.This individual has a strong knowledge of fiber optic installation with a basic understanding of excavation standards and practices and must become proficient with the products and services offered by Pillar Innovations. This position will require a flexible schedule to include extended hours, nights, weekends, and travel with overnight stays as needed.The Fiber Sensing Installation Technician will report to the Project Manager - Fiber Optics and will work primarily in the Carlsbad, NM and Odessa, TX area.Provide communication and oversight to contractors and customer personnel to ensure fiber deployment is to spec, undamaged, and in good working conditionPeriodically conduct oversight OTDR testing to ensure fiber reels and cable remain in operational condition during deploymentDevelop and manage a detailed project schedule and work planProvide project updates on a consistent basis regarding strategy, adjustments, and progressTroubleshoot and repair common fiber optic equipment and component issues to include OTDR testing, reporting, and troubleshootingSuggest and execute corrective actions to address problems affecting any fiber or fiber related equipmentCollaborate with customer and management to develop a strategic deployment plan that streamlines installation and minimizes excess cable wastePerform full acceptance testing on fiber reels to ensure fiber is undamaged and in proper working condition upon delivery from manufacturerAssist in geolocating key reference points and provide distances between points along fiber pathwayInstall and pull underground conduit and cable without disrupting utilitiesInstall handholes, pedestals, and marker postsAssist with marking underground proposed design routes with respect to utilities and underground systemsFacilitate communications between the customer and companyConsult with and gather information from technicians, engineers, contractors, etc. to ensure an effective flow of informationMaintain positive vendor and client relationshipsEnsure industry best practices, techniques, and standards throughout entire project executionOperate basic hand tools (Cordless Drill, Hammer, Wrench, Socket Set) Recognize general safety hazards such as missing and or degraded parts and hardwareManage worksite housekeeping duties and equipment inspectionsStay up to date with Industry Standard coding for fiber opticsProficiently work with fiber optic equipment such as splicers, OTDR (optical time domain refractometer), light-source power-meter, fiber specific hand tools, etc.Utilize proper methods and procedures for terminating, splicing, and testing fiber optic cablesInstall demarcation enclosures, switches, and other telecom equipmentCalibrate fiber optic equipment out in the field according to manufacturer’s instructionsRead and interpret design packagesComplete documentation to include T&M, record-keeping, billing, inventory, COB (close of business) reports etc.Generate trace reports and SEP (splice engineering package) files2-4 years of relevant Fiber Optics experience preferredBasic knowledge of excavation standards and equipment requiredAbilit to multi-task and manage multiple projects effectivelyAdaptable and calm under pressureAbility to identify independent colors and learn color codesValid Driver’s License is required Experience with the following equipment: ladders, cable puller, and reel stands preferredSmall equipment experience preferred (i.e. forklift, bobcat, telehandler, skid steer, etc.) Ability to work effectively under minimal supervisionAbility to inspect, operate, and mobilize a bucket truckAbility to apply technical expertise, evaluate problems and implement best practices Possess strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to maintain professionalism Compute basic math calculations and take measurementsAbility to read and execute network drawings and splicing diagramsFamiliar with Microsoft Software such as Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, and VisioWorking ConditionsWalk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb ladders and stairs; crawl; kneelThe employee must occasionally lift and/or move upto 80 pounds unassisted.Must be safety and customer-focused, without exceptionPerks/BenefitsComprehensive BenefitsHealth/Life insurance401(k) retirement planShort/Long term disabilityPaid time off and holidaysPaid lodging, per diem, and transportation provided for out-of-town workEmployee focused work environmentOn-the-job mentoring and trainingInternal job postingsPerformance and salary reviewsEmployee feedback programAdvancement through defined employee career pathsSafety-first and drug free work environmentsBonuses and incentives for working safelyCompany provided tools and basic safety equipmentPPE allowances with no restrictions on vendorsWeekly pay with premium pay for Sundays and holidaysSmart Money program with optional counseling to aid employees with financial goalsScholarship opportunities for dependent childrenAdditional Eligibility QualificationsThis position requires the completion of a thorough background and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
