About the Job Overview: This bargaining unit position is responsible for cleaning, washing, sterilizing, assembling, and caring for various kinds of lab animal housing equipment. This may require the ability to stand for long periods of time while working. Ongoing tasks may include the following: Operate animal equipment washers, autoclaves, and bedding dispensing/disposal equipment Move/lift heavy equipment/animals. Ensure optimal functioning of the equipment by performing basic routine maintenance tasks and reporting any needed repairs to the supervisor. Disassemble dirty housing equipment, dump dirty bedding into appropriate disposal containers, sanitize equipment, & assemble clean equipment. Ensure the use of appropriate PPE and adhere to established procedures for the safe handling of various equipment and biohazardous materials in cagewash areas Attend and complete assigned safety training by the required due dates Order and store feed and supplies. Clean and sanitize equipment, rooms, and facilities. Sterilize animal housing equipment in an autoclave in accordance with proper autoclave equipment handling procedures. Assemble lab animal housing equipment Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor. The normal work schedule for this position is weekdays, Monday through Friday, 6:00 am - 2:30 pm. Occasional weekend work and work on holidays will be required when scheduled, and is eligible for overtime and holiday pay. Some work assignments will involve exposure to animal allergens, high levels of noise, and/or disinfectants and sanitizing agents. To protect employees, the University of Minnesota may require you to wear personal protection equipment, some of which may require medical monitoring and fitness testing. All required protective equipment, testing and medical evaluations will be provided by the University. All offers of employment for this position will be conditioned on the completion of a medical questionnaire, evidence of current tetanus immunization prior to start date, and/or a fitness for duty examination to ensure the applicant's ability to work in an environment that may present occupational health and safety hazards associated with work. Qualifications Required Qualifications: High school graduate or equivalent, or some experience with laboratory equipment. If assigned to be a driver, must pass a department of motor vehicle record screening. Must be able to work an early schedule, Monday through Friday 6:00 am - 2:30 pm. Must have availability to work occasional weekends and holidays. Must be able to lift/push 50 pounds. Must be able to understand and follow written and oral instruction in English. Preferred Qualifications: Professional experience related to customer service, hands-on work, or production lines. About the Department Research Animal Resources (RAR) primarily focuses on the service and administration of the animal care and use program at the University of Minnesota. The position of Laboratory Attendant is union represented, and is part of a staff of over 100 employees including Professional and Administrative staff, Civil Service staff, Union Represented members, and student employees. RAR has an approximate daily census of 24,000 rodent cages in 19 buildings split into geographic teams around the Twin Cities Campus. Pay and Benefits Pay Range: $22.38-25.19; depending on qualifications/education/experience. Candidates without qualifying UMN Teamster experience will be hired at $22.38/hour.
