Manager, External Communications & Public Relations Base pay range: $90,000.00/yr - $100,000.00/yrPosition title: Manager, External Communications & Public Relations Reports to: Vice President, Communications & Advocacy Department: CommunicationsPosition Summary The Manager, External Communications & Public Relations develops, leads, and executes comprehensive external communication and public relations strategies to enhance ASSP’s visibility, reputation, and influence. The role serves as the primary owner and director of ASSP’s relationship with the media, proactively seeking opportunities and responding to inquiries to promote ASSP’s expertise, events, research, standards, and the value of the safety profession.Benefits Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package. Remote work standard with remote work as standard, hybrid schedule supported with access to headquarters in Park Ridge, Illinois as needed.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDevelop and lead thought leadership strategies: define key expertise and develop PR and media plans to position leadership as industry thought leaders through various channels.Media relations and thought leader placement: proactively identify and cultivate relationships with key media outlets, journalists, and influencers to secure interviews, features, and op-eds that showcase ASSP’s expertise and leadership perspectives.Content oversight and curation: oversee and be accountable for the creation of high-quality thought leadership content, including articles, blog posts, white papers, presentations, and social media updates, ensuring alignment with the overall vision.Spokesperson identification and development: identify subject matter experts within ASSP who can serve as spokespersons; manage development of presentation skills training and resources for them; maintain database.Reputation management and crisis communications: proactively monitor media coverage and industry discussions and develop strategies to protect and enhance ASSP’s reputation, including managing crisis communications related to thought leadership topics.Social media strategy and engagement: develop and implement a social media strategy that amplifies thought leadership content, engages with industry conversations, and builds the online presence of key ASSP figures.Measurement and analysis: track and analyze the impact of thought leadership initiatives on media coverage, brand perception and overall organizational goals, providing regular reports and recommendations for improvement.Required Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesHighly proficient written and verbal communication skills, including advanced writing and editing skills with strict adherence to AP style.Experience serving as a media spokesperson or preparing leaders and subject matter experts for interviews and public appearances.Proven ability to build and sustain relationships with members of the media, partner organizations and internal leadership.Analytical skills to measure communications performance, assess outcomes, and refine strategies based on data and feedback.Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills, including ability to coordinate cross‑functional efforts and manage external consultants or vendors.Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities, emerging issues, and evolving communication landscapes.Proficient with Microsoft suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.Exceptional organizational skills and attention to mitment to ASSP’s CLEAR values (Community, Leadership, Excellence, Accountability, Respect).Ability to work M‑F during normal business hours.Ability to travel to conferences and/or meetings.Required Education and ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or related field.Seven years of progressively responsible related experience, with at least four years focused on media relations and public relations and two years managing high‑level external communications strategy.Required Core CompetenciesStrategic Vision & Implementation.Decision‑Making.Fiscal Accountability / Business Acumen.Problem‑Solving & Thinking teractions, Communications & Stakeholder Engagement.Adaptability & Change Management.Teamwork, Coaching & Leadership.Research pensation Actual compensation within the range will be dependent on the individual’s skills, experience, qualifications and location.
