achine Operator - Bridge Mill / VTL Location: Watkins Glen, NY Employment Type: Full-Time | Temp-to-Hire Compensation: Competitive pay based on experience Position Overview Express Employment Professionals is currently seeking a highly skilled Bridge Mill/VTL Machine Operator to join a manufacturing client specializing in large-scale, precision components. This position involves operating CNC bridge mills and vertical turning lathes (VTLs) to produce oversized or complex parts for industries such as aerospace, energy, and heavy equipment. Key Responsibilities Machine Setup Load large raw materials using cranes or forklifts Secure and align large workpieces and fixtures Set tool heights and work offsets Machine Operation Run CNC programs to perform turning (VTL) or milling (Bridge Mill) operations Monitor cutting conditions, chip flow, spindle load, and coolant systems Adjust feeds, speeds, and tool offsets as needed Inspection & Quality Control Use precision instruments like large calipers, height gauges, and bore gauges Perform first-article and in-process inspections Ensure parts meet blueprint and GD&T specifications Tool & Program Management Install or change large cutting tools Collaborate with programmers to optimize tool paths Input or modify CNC programs using Fanuc, Siemens, or Mazak controls Maintenance & Safety Follow all safety protocols for large equipment and overhead lifting Conduct basic machine maintenance and cleaning Report any mechanical or operational issues Equipment Operated Bridge Mills (e.g., SNK, Toshiba, Mighty Viper, Haas Gantry Series) Vertical Turning Lathes (e.g., Doosan Puma VTL, Okuma VTM, Giddings & Lewis) CNC controls: Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain, Mazatrol Required Skills Hands-on experience with large-part machining Ability to read complex blueprints and apply GD&T standards Strong understanding of G-code, feeds/speeds, and CNC control systems Familiarity with crane operation and rigging for heavy materials Proficient in precision measurement and quality inspections Preferred Certifications NIMS or equivalent machining certification Overhead crane and forklift certification OSHA 10/30-hour for manufacturing safety CNC operation or programming training Industries Served Aerospace and defense Power generation Oil and gas Marine and heavy equipment manufacturing Industrial machinery and components Career Growth Opportunities CNC Setup Lead CNC Programmer (Mastercam, Fusion 360, NX)
