Senior Academic Advisor, APPLE Corps POSITION DETAILS ABOUT JOHN JAY COLLEGE John Jay College of Criminal Justice is a senior college of the City University of New York (CUNY) and an internationally recognized leader in educating for justice. Led by President Karol V. APPLE Corps, a partnership between the City University of New York and the New York Police Department, creates pathways in the first two years of associate's degree or bachelor's degree work toward public service careers at the NYPD. Coordinated by John Jay College, 100 students will be selected each year to be APPLE Corps members as they begin degree programs at the 6 CUNY Justice Academy community colleges or at John Jay College. As part of their APPLE Corps program, each student will be required to participate in a summer academic internship experience. POSITION OVERVIEW Reporting to the APPLE Corps Program Manager, the Senior Academic Advisor will support APPLE Corps students from admission through graduation. The Advisor will serve as the primary case manager for students, providing individualized advisement, onboarding, workshops, and faculty support. The Advisor will also play a key role in summer programmingu2014including Acceleration, Summer Bridge, and Kick-Offu2014and will recommend, implement, and evaluate strategies to expand and strengthen program offerings. The Senior Academic Advisor will lead the APPLE Corps advisement team and experience, ensuring students receive consistent, developmental advising throughout their four years. This role emphasizes proactive guidance, team leadership, and program alignment with APPLE Corpsu2019 mission. Key Areas of Responsibility 1 . Advisement Team Leadership + Lead and coordinate the APPLE Corps advisement team, setting expectations for quality, consistency, and developmental support. + Collaborate with first-year and sophomore advisors to ensure smooth handoffs and continuity of student experience across all cohorts. + Serve as a resource on APPLE Corps policies, procedures, and CUNY requirements for students, faculty, and staff. + Plan and oversee APPLE Corps advisement-related events and workshops in coordination with program leadership. 2. Academic Progress + Provide individualized advisement and case management for juniors and seniors. + Monitor academic progress, conduct degree reviews and graduation audits, and identify barriers to timely completion. + Connect students to campus resources and develop targeted academic success workshops to strengthen momentum toward graduation. 3. Post-Graduate Support + Develop and facilitate workshops on graduate school applications, career readiness, and public service opportunities. + Provide individualized guidance for careers, advanced study, and civic engagement. + Act as John Jayu2019s liaison to partner campuses and external agencies, as directed by the Program Manager. 4. Professional Presence & Development + Mentor APPLE Corps students in cultivating a professional identity and presence aligned with public service fields. + Model professional standards for the advisement team and student cohorts. + Engage in ongoing professional development to remain current with best practices in academic advising and student success. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree and four years' related experience required. OTHER QUALIFICATIONS + Master's degree in student personnel administration, higher education, counseling or related field preferred. + A minimum of (2) years of experience working directly with undergraduate students in an academic setting is strongly preferred (of the total required 4 years' experience). + Direct advising experience with one or more of the following student populations preferred: transfer students, international students, disabled students, or students in academic difficulty. + Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills are required + Ability to effectively interact with a diverse faculty, staff and student population while representing the Academic Advising Center and the College to internal and external constituents required. + Preference for academic advising professionals with a background and/or knowledge of public interest or criminal justice academic programs or careers. CUNY TITLE OVERVIEW Provides expert and/or specialized academic counseling a diverse student population. - Offers comprehensive advisement to full-time and part-time students - Works with other academic affairs staff as well as enrollment and student affairs to assist students to declare majors and select appropriate courses - Monitors students' performances and takes appropriate action if necessary; resolves students' problems regarding curricular requirements - Develops academic plans and performs graduation audits - Provides information to students regarding student support services, college policies and program procedures and guidelines - Facilitates workshops; assists with other department activities such as course scheduling - Establishes and maintains student advisement files; prepares activity reports and analyses - May supervise extramural activities, such as internships and community service; may assist with accreditation efforts as needed - May provide career and transfer services and/or specialized program counseling - May supervise junior advising and/or clerical staff - Performs related duties as assigned.
