Job Description

The Town of Longmeadow, MA DPW is seeking qualified applicants for four FT positions of Truck Driver/Laborer. Responsible for the performance of semi-skilled manual work in the maintenance, construction, and repair of municipal properties, roads, and the overall completion of public works-related projects. Ensures the safety of municipal property, parks, fields, and streets for the general public; removes snow and ice, trims trees, mows grass and roadways, cuts back roadside brush, performs tree work, sweeps roads, maintains and repairs field and park areas, collects leaves, constructs sidewalks and curbing, patches roads, and performs a variety of street maintenance functions as well as other related public works functions. Successful candidate must have:Working knowledge of the safe and effective operation and mechanics of light and heavy equipment and machinery, hand tools, and cemetery operations. Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Knowledge of hydraulics.Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently. Ability to read and interpret construction project plans, pay careful attention to details, and perform work under extreme weather conditions for long periods of time. Ability to interact effectively with all other utilities. Ability to recognize unsafe working conditions to ensure that appropriate safety precautions are taken. Ability to be self-motivated. Ability to operate a wide range of construction equipment including hand and pneumatic tools and power equipment effectively and safely. Ability to complete assigned work under adverse weather conditions and to work long, extended hours during unplanned emergencies such as snow storms or floods.Basic motor and mechanical skills required in the safe and efficient operation of department equipment, tools, and department machinery.High school diploma or equivalent and at least 1 year of related experience; or any equivalent combination of education, training, certification, and experience. Current valid motor vehicle license; Class B Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements required, with Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Air Brake and Tanker Endorsements preferred. OSHA 10 and Asbestos pipe safety training.Required to be on call as needed to respond to emergenciesSalary $23.10- $24.52 per hour DOE/DOQ; Excellent benefitsAnticipated Salary increase in November Hampden County Pension System
