Summary The Hampton, VA Veterans Affairs Medical Center is seeking an experienced and dynamic Physician (Ophthalmology) to serve as the Chief of Surgery for Eye Care, utilizing basic management skills in planning, problem solving, leadership communication, and personnel management. Responsibilities This is an OPEN CONTINUOUS ANNOUNCEMENT and will remain open until September 30, 2026 or until all positions are filled. The initial cut-off date for referral of eligible applications will be 30 October 2025, with subsequent cut-off dates every two weeks. Eligible applications received after that date will be referred to at regular intervals or as additional vacancies occur on an as-needed basis until positions are filled. Major Duties and Responsibilities to include but not be limited to: Monitoring the quality of eye care rendered throughout the hospital and satellite facilities, including surgical, emergency, outpatient, and special procedure areas. Recommending through Surgical Service to the hospital administration and medical staff, the type, amount of equipment, and supplies necessary for providing appropriate care in the Eye Clinics and the Operating Room. Developing regulations and providing oversight concerning quality of care and patient safety in the Eye Clinics and the Operating Room. Establishing a program of continuing education for all personnel having Ophthalmology and Optometry privileges and ensures all mandatory training is completed timely. Participate in, support, and grow robust residency and externship programs that are currently present in the Eye service. Ensuring the qualified Ophthalmology personnel are available for the daily surgical schedule and providing a schedule for 24-hour day, 7-day-a-week availability of Ophthalmology/Optometry care. Serving as the supervisor for the Ophthalmologists, Optometrists, and Eye Technicians on the staff. Recruitment/Relocation Incentive: May be authorized for highly qualified applicants authorized by the supervisor discretion and the need of the service. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification) Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Work Schedule: 07:30 AM-4:00 PM - Monday - Friday, 40 hours/per week Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
