Position Purpose The Surgical First Assist functions as a First Assistant or as an additional assistant to the surgeon, within scope of practice. Provides scrub and/or circulating nurse services within scope or practice in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists surgical team, as needed, in any other capacity. Some of the duties of a surgical first assist include - Assists in preparing rooms with appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment. Assists with opening of sterile supplies. Assists in moving, positioning, prepping, and draping patients for surgical procedures. Assists the surgical team during operative procedures, anticipating needs of surgeon. Functions as assistant to surgeon, as evidenced by retracting tissue and exposing the operating field during operative procedures, providing homeostasis during surgical procedures and assisting in closure of incisions.
