Cytology: Cytotechnologist Job Description: Primary Responsibilities Screens and diagnoses gynecologic cytology smears (Pap smears) according to established criteria. Is responsible for final diagnosis of negative cases. Screens and diagnoses, and refers to the supervisor and the pathologist, nongynecologic and atypical gynecologic cytology smears according to established criteria. Assists the pathologist at fine needle aspirations in the Radiology Suite by preparing and staining slides for rapid interpretation. Is familiar with pathology and hospital computer systems, and all record keeping, accessioning, and reporting tasks as defined in the procedure manual. Is familiar with various methods of cytopreparation, staining, and coverslipping for all cytologic specimens and troubleshoots same. Is familiar with specimen rejection policies as well as collection and transportation policies. Cares for and maintains equipment, particularly microscopes and work area, and reports problems with equipment to the supervisor. Plans own daily work in accordance with posted job rotation and daily staffing, and prioritizes duties to accomplish daily objectives of the Laboratory. Keeps the supervisor informed of activities, and refers needs, problems, and unusual cases to the supervisor. Maintains professional growth and development through attendance at continuing education sessions within the Laboratory, and at seminars, workshops, conferences, or professional meetings outside the hospital. Understands the overall system and work flow of the Cytology Laboratory and can assist with problem solving when necessary. Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies, established hospital and department policies and objectives. Performs other similar or related duties as required or as directed. Required Qualifications Must have a Bachelors Degree with the successful completion from an accredited cytotechnology program. Must be qualified and meet all requirements according to CLIA `88 FINAL RULES Up-to-date knowledge of the field of cytotechnology. Must have recent cytology work experience and attendance at continuing education seminars and workshops. Extended periods of visual acuity and mental concentration in a small room in order to interpret cellular changes and render accurate diagnoses of patient samples. Environmental Requirements Exposure to toxic, carcinogenic, and odorous chemicals Exposure to biohazardous patient samples. Adherence to proper safety procedures minimizes risk of injury Fine hand manipulation, hand controls, and repetitive hand movement to enter data. Sits more than six hours per day. Some typing Visual concentration more than six hours per day at video display terminal to review data Ability to distinguish colors Complies with precautions, as defined by Infection Control staff, in patients/materials requiring isolation. Consistently uses sharps safety devices as designed to prevent injuries to self Pay Range: $45.00 - $60.56 The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
