Job Description

Erie County District Attorney. Chief Confidential Criminal Investigator. The work involves responsibility for supervising and actively participating in all investigative workconducted by the District Attorney's Office. The work entails assembling evidence to assist in gaining a conviction in a Court of Law or to warrant a Grand Jury hearing preparatory to a possible indictment. Work is performed under the general supervision of the DA with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment to ensure the goals of the office are met. General or direct supervision is exercised over all Criminal Investigators. Related work as required.TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIESAssign and supervise work of Confidential Criminal InvestigatorsPlan procedures in investigating complaints or violations of the Penal LawOversee and actively participate in investigating, collecting and correlating evidence, exhibits, statements of witnesses and reports findingsPrepare evidence for presentation to Grand Jury and CourtsReview criminal investigators' work and ensure they are appropriately trained for their assignmentMaintain records and reports on use of all technical equipment, and ensure that equipment is in good working condition and repairSupervise assignment, distribution and maintenance of undercover vehiclesConfer with prosecuting attorneys regarding cases and needed investigative activityAssist and act as liaison between DA and police agenciesGive competent testimony in all CourtsDevelop and maintain a good working relationship with all segments of criminal justice communityPrepare and maintain concise, complete and accurate records and reportsDevelop and maintain contact with confidential sourcesFULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICSThorough knowledge of procedures, methods and techniques of criminal investigation Thorough knowledge of New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law, Penal Law and Code of Criminal Procedures Ability to plan and direct work of investigative staff Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and reports Persistence in following up all leads and sound judgment in weighing evidence uncovered Resourcefulness conducting investigations Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with all segments of the Criminal Justice community and to excel in investigative workGood moral and ethical character; IntegrityIndustrious and able to work without close supervisionPhysically capable of performing essential functions of position with or without reasonable accommodationMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:A) Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university with a Bachelor's degree and 9 years experience as a police officer, at least 4 years of which included criminal investigative work experience ORB) Completion of a minimum of 60 semester credit hours from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university and 11 years experience as a police officer, at least 4 years of which included criminal investigative work experience ORC) Graduation from high school or a high school equivalency diploma and 13 years experience as a police officer, at least 4 years of which included criminal investigative work experience ORD) Equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by A, B, C & DSPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:Possess a Police Officer Basic Training Certificate or equivalent issued by the New York State Municipal Police Training Council at time of appointmentPossess a valid New York State Drivers License at time of appointmentMeet minimum standards on annual firearms qualificationNOTE: Verifiable part-time and/or volunteer experience will be pro-rated toward meeting full-time experience requirementsFORWARD RESUME TO: or Kathleen CallanChief of AdministrationErie County District Attorney's Office25 Delaware Ave.Buffalo, New York 14202
