Essential Functions + Assumes responsibility for the orientation of new employees to the unit. u2022 Creates an orientation program for each role in the unit. u2022 Develops, implements, and evaluates , sterile processing unit specific skills classes for new employees. u2022 Collaborates with unit manager to counsel/coach new employees during orientation to assist the orienteeu2019s progress towards gaining competency in unit standards/skills. u2022 Supports the preceptor role by: u2022 Collaborating with CN, department leaders and preceptor to select appropriate assignments and learning experiences for new staff. u2022 Fostering the use of adult learning strategies and critical thinking with preceptors by providing ideas, skill stations, different teaching styles, and related activities to help the preceptor be a more effective teacher. u2022 Participating in the development, presentation, and evaluation of the preceptor program, in collaboration with other area educators and CNSu2019s. + Assumes responsibility for the coordination of staff education processes through the development, implementation, and evaluation of education materials/systems. u2022 Collaborates with appropriate resources (i.e. leadership team, CNSs, other educators, content experts, organization development) to analyze needs and develop, implement, evaluate and maintain education programs (i.e. orientation skills checklists, self-studies, education videos, education supplies, and orientation manual) based on annual needs assessment, staff request, unit direction, new equipment/care practices, variance trends, and patient/parent and other customersu2019 satisfaction. u2022 Educational activities reflect identified needs of the target audience and/or organizational priorities related to clinical practice. u2022 Designs each educational activity to include documentation of a needs assessment, description of target audience, educational objectives, content outline, teaching methods (Cornerstone, self-study, presentation, real-time, simulation), evaluation strategies, and designation of appropriate resources (i.e. room arrangements, AV equipment, handouts, other teaching aids). u2022 Creates programs that incorporate adult learning strategies, ethical principles, critical thinking skills, professional growth, open communication, and collaborative relationships. u2022 Quality of information developed is professional with regards to organization of information, clarity of instructions, attention to details, and presentation style. u2022 Identifies staffu2019s individual talent in order to assist in their personal and professional development by: u2022 Sharing ideas, experiences, and successful behavior patterns. u2022 Establishing a relationship with the staff as a resource. u2022 Providing a supportive framework to guide career development. + Role models and promotes high quality professional patient care through the use of clinical educational knowledge as seen in: u2022 Assisting staff with direct patient care u2022 Reviews case cart and preference card before each case. Prepares the operating room by supplying it with supplies and instruments to provide appropriate patient care oSets up and maintains the sterile field during the procedure using strict aseptic technique oPrepares and labels fluids and medications on sterile field oPerforms appropriate counts prior to the operation and before incision is closed. oParticipates in time out/sign out process u2022 Scrubs to assist the surgeon in the completion of surgical procedures by demonstrating a working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment needed for a variety of procedures. u2022 o Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and providing sterile items in an efficient manner, as directed by the surgeon/proceduralist. u2022 Implements sharps safety practices including use of a safety zone. u2022 Prepares specimens for pathologic analysis u2022 Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization u2022 Assists operating room team with environmental cleaning and case turnovers. u2022 Stores and stocks supplies as needed u2022 Participates in assigned on call activities. u2022 Utilizes unit daily/weekly rounding as a tool in identifying educational clinical needs of staff/unit and teaches bedside staff to promote u2022 consistent delivery of patient care standards. u2022 Accepts assignment to be assigned to the unit for shift for direct patient care. Professionally supports the assigned unit as seen through interactions with patients, families, staff, colleagues, others. u2022 Professionally seeks opportunities to help teammates during shift as needed. u2022 Serves as preceptor for new staff within OR/SPD and other education staff as necessary. u2022 Demonstrates ability to prioritize workload and follows through with work in a timely manner. + Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job. + Perform physical requirements as described in the Physical Requirements section Education Qualifications + Graduate of an accredited School of Surgical Technologist Required or + Applicable surgical technologist course of study Required Experience Qualifications + Minimum 2 years of experience working as a Surgical Technologist and/or competency in scrubbing in 2 or more surgical specialties as a Surgical Technologist Required Skills and Abilities + Knowledge and proficiency in applying the nursing process, nursing skills, and nursing research into patient care, teaching, and systems. + Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing to include use of computer technology in program presentations and/or data analysis. + Able to be self-directed, with minimum supervision, and detail oriented. + Must be able to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature, without loss of efficiency or composure, and be able to perform under stressful conditions when confronted with multiple requests, demonstrating prioritization skills.
