Outside machinists are assigned responsibility for installing, grooming and testing the shipu2019s major mechanical components and systems. Work occurs on commercial or naval ships in various stages of new construction, overhaul or repair. Examples of shipu2019s components work on are steam turbines, reduction gears, propellers, reactor components, catapults, weapons systems, periscopes and can be as diverse as laundry, food service or refrigeration equipment. Outside machinist operate a wide variety of tools and machinery. The tools range from wrenches and screwdrivers to complex and sophisticated equipment such as saws, drill presses, optical equipment, mills, portable machines, boring equipment, precision grinders, instruments and lathes. Watch this Machinist video to learn more: Must Have Candidates must be 18 years of age or older and legally eligible to work in the U.S. Candidates must be able to: u2022 Climb ladders and work at extreme heights. u2022 Work in small, tight, or confined spaces. u2022 Kneel, squat, crawl, bend, stoop, and climb on a daily basis. u2022 Lift heavy objects weighing 40 lbs. or more u2022 Work while repeatedly reaching overhead. u2022 Work indoors or outdoors year-round in all weather conditions. u2022 Work in areas with radiation. u2022 Take and pass a respirator fit test. u2022 Work assigned shift as production needs. u2022 Take and pass a Physical Agility Test. Qualified candidates must have three (3) or more years experience as a machinist, machinist mate, mechanic/automotive repairman, engine man, heavy equipment repairman or similar experience. Nice to Have Prior Mechanical experience such as Automotive Repair, Plant Maintenance, Machinery Installation/Repair is a plus. Successful completion of a technical/vocational program in Machining, Diesel Technology, Automotive, HVAC, Mechanical.
