Summary The psychiatrist is assigned to the Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Clinic within the Mental Health Service. The staff psychiatrist will diagnose substance use disorders as well as general psychiatric disorders through a variety of modalities and provide adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders. Responsibilities Start, continue, or finish your career here VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System The staff psychiatrist in the Substance Use Disorders clinic is expected to have a breadth of knowledge encompassing a wide range of pharmacotherapies and other interventions to support the treatment of substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health disorders. Clinical Responsibilities: (100%) Provides a full range of psychiatric services. Diagnoses substance use disorders and co-occurring general psychiatric disorders in complex and challenging patients. Provides comprehensive interventions to address the above. Participates in Outpatient Withdrawal Management and Addiction Stabilization clinic (OWMAS) clinic as appropriate based on location. Makes determinations as to the appropriate level of withdrawal care, starts and manages medications to treat alcohol withdrawal in the outpatient setting, initiates buprenorphine and provides timely follow up for transitional patients needing buprenorphine continued. Provides consultation to professional staff within the SUD Clinic and the other programs in the Mental Health Service. Develops, implements, and documents the psychotherapeutic treatment plan for an assigned caseload of patients, including prompt completion of clinical reminders and VA approved mental health treatment plans (within Mental Health Suite). Functions independently as a member of the VA ECHCS Medical Staff, with full clinical privileges. Assumes complete professional responsibility for their clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions, and documentation. Provides outreach services to veterans and family members. Teaching and Training: Provides clinical supervision and instruction for psychiatry residents, medical students, or other prescribing disciplines in outpatient clinic setting and while on call (if applicable). Other requirements that are still considered clinical time: Assists the program director or coordinator in the design, development, and implementation of clinical programs for a team of treatment providers when called upon to do so and with an attendant reduction in caseload. Adheres to operational policies and procedures for the treatment team. Assist the program director, medical director, or coordinator in the execution of ongoing program evaluation and data-driven quality improvement projects to monitor the effectiveness of the clinical program. Facilitates liaisons with other health care programs in order to effectively coordinate services. Complies with national and local performance measures, including timely health care screening and completion of clinical reminders for all patients. Complies with all CPRS documentation procedures, including timeliness standards for documentation and proper patient check out procedures (e.g., entering diagnostic and procedure codes). Attends and participates in administrative and informational meetings held by the Service Line Director (or designee) and facility Director. Attends regular Team staff meetings, Mental Health Staff meetings, and complies with Service peer review procedures. Performs required call as appropriate.
