The Our Whole History (OWH) initiative of the NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) seeks to reveal and share historically undertold stories of ordinary and extraordinary people and events across New York State. Falling under the umbrella of the Our Whole History initiative is Enslavement to Freedom 1627u20131827u20132027 (E2F), a landmark, multi-year public education and commemoration project that shines a light on New York Stateu2019s deeply undertold history of slavery and its enduring legacy. In 2027, New York State will recognize the 200th anniversary of the end of legalized slavery in the state (1827) and the 400th anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans enslaved in the former New Netherland colony (1627). The goals of the Enslavement to Freedom project are to expand the narratives of historic sites by taking a deeper look into this history and its impact on later historic movements by developing exhibits, public programs, and other educational resources. This fellowship is funded by a suballocation to OPRHP from the NYS Department of State acting on behalf of the NYS African American History Commission with the express intent to advance the knowledge of and access to historic material and artifacts related to the presence of Africans and their descendants in the history of the New York State. OPRHPu2019s Community Preservation Bureauu2019s Survey & National Register Unit oversees the statewide inventory of historic resources and administers the State and National Registers of Historic Places programs in New York. Working under the Parksu2019 Our Whole History umbrella and focused specifically on the Enslavement to Freedom project, we are seeking a candidate for a National Register fellowship to produce site-specific research and writing, culminating in amendments to existing National Register nominations. The project will focus solely on New York State Historic Sites. The Enslavement to Freedom National Register Fellowship Program is seeking a highly motivated candidate to support research and writing focusing on the history of Black people at New York State Historic Sites. The fellowship offers hands-on experience in scholarly research, public history, and historic preservation practices contributing directly to National Register of Historic Places documentation. The specific state historic sites for which the fellow will prepare the National Register amendments include Philipse Manor Hall in Yonkers, Johnson Hall in Johnstown, Lorenzo in Cazenovia, Clermont in Germantown, and Herkimer Home in Little Falls. Job duties may include but are not limited to:u2022 Prepare State and National Register of Historic Places nomination amendments and additional documentation, including research, writing, and documenting historic resources through photography.u2022 Meet all associated National Register deadlines needed to complete the nomination process.u2022 Conduct archival research at Peebles Island and the five historic sites as well as other local repositories u2022 Maintain organized research files and documentation for project archives.u2022 Participate and present at quarterly New York State Board for Historic Preservation meetings.u2022 Enter National Register project data into the NYS Cultural Resource Information System (CRIS), ensuring consistency and accuracy.Supervision and training will be given in all of the above tasks. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:No minimum qualifications per Civil Service.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: u2022 Previous experience in a museum, historical society, arts organization, or historic preservation organization preferred.u2022 Strong knowledge of New York State history and African American history preferred.u2022 Working knowledge of the National Register of Historic Places guidelines and standards preferred. Additional Comments OPERATIONAL NEEDS: u2022 SUNY student currently enrolled as a senior in an undergraduate program or enrolled in a graduate or doctoral program in History, Public History, Museum Studies, Africana Studies, Architectural History, Historic Preservation or a closely related field.
