POSITION SUMMARY: Perform a variety of security and safety related functions while involved in the safeguarding of employees, patients, visitors, physicians, and property. Provides supervision, leadership and oversight for assigned shift. Coordinates with the Lieutenant to resolve shift, patrol routes, employee issues and scheduling. COMPETENCIES u00b7 Must be able to read, speak and write proficiently in English in order to effectively communicate on a daily basis with staff, patients and visitors. u00b7 Must be in good physical condition in order to quickly move up and down stairs, run in order to respond to urgent situations, stand for long periods and walk long rounds. u00b7 Must be capable of taking swift and efficient action, forcibly detaining, restraining and/or extracting persons from the premises when responding to emergency codes or other urgent situations. u00b7 Must be alert and have excellent observation skills u00b7 Must have good communication and analytical abilities and ability to exercise independent judgement in emergency situations. u00b7 Must possess a working knowledge of applicable state laws, especially those dealing with use of force and detention powers. u00b7 Must have a thorough knowledge of the floor plan of the hospital including all the normal and emergency entry and exit points. u00b7 Must have knowledge about Hospital and departmental policies and procedures, performing and enforcing said policies and procedures. First Responder: u00b7 Acts as first responders, immediately responding to all emergency codes and uses established procedure once on-scene. Follows proper PMT and descalation training and follows clinical direction when detaining or restraining a patient or unruly visitor u00b7 Ensures emergency teams have unobstructed routes to areas they need to access and works with local EMS services (Fire, Police, Ambulance), when needed. u00b7 Acts as a liaison between the hospital and law enforcement agency u00b7 Places miscreants under citizenu2019s arrest until he can be handed over to the law enforcement officials Patrolling/Routine Monitoring: u00b7 Safeguards against vandalism, theft, fire and injury to employees, patient and visitors. u00b7 Patrols external and internal areas of the hospital, parking areas, and grounds and assists in monitoring the safety of entrances and exits. Documents time of rounds at assigned stations using a data recording system. u00b7 Maintains a security presence throughout the hospital, utilizing CCTV, access control equipment, and physical patrols to monitor egress and ingress of personnel and to identify and restrict the access of unauthorized persons. u00b7 Identifies and responds to suspicious activity. u00b7 Provides guidance and assistance to patients and visitors after normal hospital working hours. Provides verbal direction to departments and persons, and if possible, provides a personal escort when needed. Preventative Maintenance u00b7 Conducts regular testing of alarms, including but not limited to, Fire Alarm drills in accordance with Joint Commission recommended standards. Monitors employee response and actions during fire drills. Documents problem areas and provides a report to the Safety Committee to include recommendations. u00b7 Responds to all alarm activation's and investigates cause. u00b7 Inspects Hospital for fire or environmental hazards, ensuring that the security arrangements in the hospital like computers, alarm systems and close circuit cameras are functioning properly. Theft Prevention: u00b7 Responsible for the collection of all lost and found items and produces the proper documentation and location of owner property when possible. u00b7 Upon request, collects patient valuables and secure in the property room safe until called for. u00b7 Investigates and documents the facts and a description of the reports of theft or vandalism in an incident report and forwards the report to the Security Sergeant or lead. Upon request, or when the situation warrants, summons the local police to investigate. Additional Duties: u00b7 Coordinates shift schedules with assigned officers and Director. Obtains staff backup when warranted due to employee illness, vacation or vacancy. Completes staff performance appraisals and reviews with the Director prior to discussing with the employee. Provides direction, job coaching and advice. u00b7 Respond to calls for morgue duty and applies proper lifting techniques. (i.e. transport deceased patient to the morgue and responsible for proper release of the body). u00b7 Enforces all parking regulations and traffic control. Assists with valet parking services. Issues warning tickets to employees parked in unauthorized areas. Escorts or drives motor vehicle to transport individuals to specified locations. u00b7 Operates badge making equipment, CCTV, Access Consoles and two-way radios. u00b7 Documents reports of daily activities, investigations and irregularities. u00b7 Assists Engineering in responding to facility needs when Engineering not on duty. Contacts Engineering designee on call, if needed. u00b7 Performs other duties as requested by supervisors. EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION u00b7 Must be a high school graduate as evidenced by a diploma or GED equivalency certificate. u00b7 Must possess an Associate Degree or sixty (60) semester hours from an accredited institution in Criminal Justice or a related field. u00b7 Must possess and maintain a valid driveru2019s license, maintain a driving record free of any violations and pass a safe driving educational program upon hire and annually thereafter in order to be eligible to participate in the Fleet Vehicle Program as outlined in the Eastern Connecticut Health Networku2019s Environment of Care Safety Policies and Procedures #110. u00b7 Must possess a current Connecticut Security Officer Identification Card. u00b7 Must be trained in PMT and de-escalation techniques, as prescribed by ECHN. EXPERIENCE u00b7 A minimum of five-years of previous security or security-related experience, such as law enforcement, or military service is necessary. u00b7 Previous lead or supervisory experience is preferred.
