JOB REQUIREMENTS: The Wauwatosa Police Department's mission is:Dedicated service and protection for all and our vision is: To foster asafe and secure community through collaboration, trust, and exceptionalpolice service. A Wauwatosa Police Officer will be ready to serve andcommitted to the mission and vision of the department. Police Officersare responsible for providing protection of life and property; promotingand preserving peace through cooperation; enforcing municipal, state andfederal laws; and delivering police-related services for all residentsand visitors of Wauwatosa, WI. This position isresponsible for the essential duties below and other duties as assigned.For this hiring process, we are only accepting applicants who meet oneof the following requirements: Are certified in law enforcement andcurrently employed by a Wisconsin law enforcement agency. Previouslyemployed as a certified law enforcement officer for a Wisconsin lawenforcement agency, with a separation date within three years of theanticipated hire date. Have graduated or will graduate from a Wisconsinlaw enforcement preparatory academy (720 hours) prior to appointment.Currently hold or have held full-time employment as a certified orlicensed law enforcement or tribal law enforcement officer in anotherstate, with a minimum of one-year beyond basic training. If no longeremployed, applicant must have left law enforcement employmentvoluntarily with a good record and separated from full-time lawenforcement within three years of the anticipated hire date. LATERALTRANSFER CANDIDATES: Lateral transfers who are hired are eligible forplacement into a higher starting wage and paid time off amount (based onyears of experience). Check out the BENEFITS tab for more information.(Note that some benefits are different for Police Officers, and detailswould be shared during the recruitment and selection process) EssentialFunctions The following duties shall not be construed as exclusive orinclusive. Other related duties may be required and assigned. Preservesthe peace by responding to calls for assistance involving altercationsbetween people, including but not limited to domestic disturbances,fighting, and neighborhood disputes; performs crowd and traffic control;enforces state and local laws and ordinances relating to keeping of thepeace; provides foot patrol to residential and business areas in orderto maintain community relations. Protects life by responding to callsfor service and emergency assistance; renders aid to the physicallyinjured, handicapped, and others requiring assistance, including but notlimited to victims of accidents, criminal incidents, and mental orphysical disabilities; investigates safety hazards and takes action tocorrect potential problem areas, including road hazards, defects, andenvironmental hazards. Protects property by performing security checksof residences and businesses, physically walking through residentialareas and viewing all areas of buildings to ensure their physicalintegrity; observes potential of real hazards including but not limitedto natural disasters, fires, alarms, gas leaks, hazardous materialspills, roadway debris, and other structure and infrastructure defects,and take corrective action by contacting proper authorities forassistance and/or securing areas through the use of barricades of otherdevices; takes found property into custody for safekeeping. Investigatesviolations of state laws and local ordinances, and arrests violatorsusing the degree of force necessary in accordance with state law anddepartment policy; secures and protects crime scenes in order toidentify and collect any physical evidence present; obtains descriptionsof suspects and vehicles involved in crimes or criminal activity;enforces traffic laws on order to curtail violations which endangerlives and property, including excessive speed, driving under theinfluence of alcohol/drugs, and careless driving. Prepares incident andaccident reports, affidavits, citations, legal documents, memorandums,and other job-related forms and documents; prepares and testifies incourt as to report information and action taken; uses computers to enterand query information as necessary in the performance of officialduties. Participates in job related training and courses to maintainskills, knowledge, and abilities necessary to perform duties andmaintain law enforcement certification. Maintains physical conditionnecessary to perform official duties and day to day operations, and tooperate job related equipment, including lethal and non-lethal weapons,radios, handcuffs, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, crime scene kits,and other equipment as needed. Performs service related activitiesincluding assistance to broken down, lost, or locked out motorists,animal complaints, nuisance calls, and other calls for service aswarranted. Drives and operates police vehicles in routine and emergencysituations, including normal day to day driving, emergency responses tocalls and high-speed pursuits of offending vehicles. OTHEREXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum Requirements Be at least 21 yearsold, and a United States Citizen. Certified copy of birth certificate ornaturalization certificate required. Document must be produced at thePolice & Fire Commission Interview. Education: A minimum of 30 collegecredits from an accredited college or university at the time of hire.Copies of transcript(s) required. Additionally, 60 college credits willbe required within five years of an officer's initial date of hire as asworn law enforcement officer. Not have any felony or domestic violenceconvictions. Valid driver's license at time of application andthroughout employment. Vision 20/40 corrected. Ability to communicate inEnglish, both orally and in writing, in a clear manner using appropriategrammar. Ability to operate a motor vehicle under normal and adverseconditions while maintaining the ability to communicate and activate theequipment in the vehicle. Ability to make quick decisions, accurateobservations, use sound judgment and maintain a professional demeanorunder ordinary and stressful situations. Ability to recall details, copywritten and oral information and apply instructions with a high degreeof accuracy. Ability to read and comprehend legal and non-legal materialwritten in English. Ability to learn and comply with departmentoperations, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures associated withthe position. Ability to learn and apply federal, state, and municipallaws and ordinances related to police duties and responsibilities.Ability to apply concepts, procedures, and techniques related tointerviewing, investigations, defense and arrest tactics, evidencepreservation, search/seizure, and the use of force.
