Second, the incumbent must provide administrative and research leadership that promotes clinical trial research at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center. This includes providing physician leadership to the Research Commons area, guiding new investigators through the clinical trial research startup process at MEDVAMC, and providing on-going mentoring to junior investigators. The incumbent will also provide guidance for MEDVAMC clinical research to mid and senior level clinical researchers. The incumbent will promote clinical research by assisting with growth of both number and enrollment success of clinical trials at MEDVAMC through his/her research leadership. S/he will also be directly involved in the long-term strategic planning for clinical trial growth, including executive management and planning with the Research Service Line leadership and other key stakeholders. Finally, the incumbent will be expected to foster a good working relationship with the Office of Research and Development NODES leadership and provide guidance and leadership to the MEDVAMC NODES. Responsibilities This includes responsibility for the administrative and technical supervision and management of the administration and operations functions within the Research Service Line and NODES including supervision of staff. Exercise supervisory authorities and responsibilities involving work assignments and reviews, as well as the administrative and personnel management functions. Establish guidelines and performance standards for staff, which are clearly communicated through the formal employee performance management system. Resolve informal complaints and grievances. Provides advice and counsel to the Research Leadership Team related to work and administrative matters. Effects disciplinary measures, such as warnings and proposed reprimands, recommending other action in more serious cases. The incumbent must have a working knowledge and understanding of the techniques of supervision and employee relations, including various methods of training and orienting a variety of people at all levels of skill and education. Responsible for planning and carrying out assignments, recognizing and resolving conflicts, coordinating and delegating the work of subordinates, coordinating with staff and management personnel, and conducting all phases of the program. May be called upon to occasionally cover duties as Acting ACOS/R in case of leave.
