Posting Details Job Title Assistant Professor in Physics (Tenure Track, F0153A) Department PHYSICS Position Number F0153A Job Description The Department of Physics at Old Dominion University invites applicants for an Assistant Professor in Experimental Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics to begin in Fall 2026. This is a 10-month tenure track appointment. Responsibilities of the candidate will include: + Establishing an externally funded research program in experimental atomic, molecular and optical ( AMO ) physics, broadly defined + Teaching physics courses at the undergraduate and graduate level, consistent with the academic programs of the department + Performing service activities commensurate with rank. Teaching and service responsibilities of the position are commensurate with other Carnegie Research-1 institutions. Minimum required level and type of experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities + Demonstrated ability in the execution and analysis of AMO experiments. + Ability to teach at the undergraduate and/or graduate level, as demonstrated either by formal classroom / lab teaching or professional presentations. Preferred Qualifications + Postdoctoral research experience. + A strong publication record. + Experience preparing peer-reviewed external grant proposals or experiment proposals. About the College About the Department The Physics Department at Old Dominion University contributes to the overall mission of the university through teaching of undergraduate and graduate students, through premier research programs and through outreach to the university community and beyond. The department offers 2 undergraduate majors (Physics and Astrophysics) with several concentrations and about 87 undergraduate students, as well as a minor in Physics. The department has over 50 M.S. and Ph.D. students, including 20 international students. Our faculty are internationally recognized leaders in experimental and theoretical nuclear physics, atomic and molecular physics, accelerator science, and condensed matter physics.
