The Medical Assistantperforms routine clinical and clerical tasks to maintain a clean,organized, and efficient medical clinic providing quality care topatients. This position is a full-time position with benefits, working10 months collectively per academic year, with 2 months typicallyscheduled off corresponding to breaks in the academic calendar. Dutiesand Responsibilities 1. Under the direction of a health care provider(HCP ), perform procedures in the clinical area: escort patients toexamination rooms; obtain pertinent health information such as height,weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, reason for visit; performvision screenings; assist with forms and paperwork; perform eye or earirrigations; obtain pulse oximeter and peak flow readings; applydressings; perform EKGs; apply orthopedic supports; assist providerswith examinations and procedures. 2. Assist with laboratory proceduresas needed and as trained: perform phlebotomy, urine dipsticks, rapidstrep screens, monospot tests. Instruct patients in proper collection ofurine specimens. Insert IVs for purpose of hydration, if trained to doso. 3. Maintain inventory of clinical supplies including stocking,purchasing and ordering recommendations. This task will include orderand credit card reconciliation. The medical assistant will workcollaboratively with the other nursing staff to ensure stocking of roomsand clinic supplies as needed 4. Maintain neat, clean patient careareas; sanitize areas per clinic policy; change linens on beds; organizeand maintain well-stocked exam and treatment rooms. Assist with openingand closing procedures of the clinic. Assist with clinic maintenance,equipment cleaning, disinfecting, and instrument sterilizationprocedures as per protocol. Distribute crutches and other orthopedicequipment as directed by HCP and provide proper fitting and patientinstructions regarding use and care. 5. Utilizing the Medical HealthInformation System, schedule follow-up appointments, order lab testsunder the direction of the HCP or RN and assist with immunizationrecords. 6. Dispense over-the-counter me ication as prescribed by theHCP . Provide appropriate patient instructions. 7. Under the directionof a medical provider, and as trained, administer vaccines, PPDplacement and readings. 8. Maintain supply of patient educationalhandouts and referral lists. 9. Assist with clinic maintenance,equipment cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization procedures 10.Perform telephone calls to patients with lab results as ordered by HCP .Phone or fax outside pharmacy prescription refills as ordered by HCP .Schedule specialized tests such as ultrasound and CT scan and helparrange urgent appointments with specialists as directed by HCP . 11.Attend continuing education courses, staff meetings, and participate instaff development programs to enhance skills thereby improving patientcare and clinic function 12. Update and write clinic policy andprocedures as directed OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities High school diploma orequivalent Graduation from an accredited medical assistant program orsimilar accredited program BLS training Excellent verbal and writtencommunication skills, respectful of the confidential nature of medicalinformation Ability to function in a team environment and demonstrate aprofessional practice style compatible with and supportive of MarquetteUniversity's mission Ability to work in a fast-paced environment withfrequent standing and walking Ability to lift up to 25 pounds PreferredKnowledge, Skills and Abilities 2 years of experience in primary caresetting preferred. Certification or eligibility for certification isrecommended as well as experience in primary care, urgent care, orcollege health setting.
