We want your knowledge and expertise Job Summary and Qualifications GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: The employee is responsible for daily activities associated with the processing of tissues as received from surgical procedures; participation in the education of pathology residents in tissue processing and participation in the quality assurance activities that are associated with these processes. The incumbent will serve as a Grossing Technician in the Gross Room and Frozen Section Services area under the supervision of the Pathologists' Assistant Lead or Medical Director of Pathology Services. DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO : Performs gross examinations, dissection and description of tissues. u2022 Workload is prioritized and managed to meet expected Turn-Around-Time (TAT) and specific specimen requirements. u2022 Competence is maintained and new skills are added as procedures and technologies change. u2022 Tissue sampling, gross descriptions and dictations are accurate and according to procedure. u2022 Specimens are photographed when appropriate for archival purposes. u2022 Performs gross procedures and dictation on routine and complex specimens as required u2022 Disposes of specimens as per guidelines and accreditation requirements u2022 Maintains, repairs and troubleshoots all equipment contacting company technical service representative as required u2022 Maintains digital equipment, keeps ready for use, produces digital photos, and assists with uploading and storage of digital files u2022 Performs and ensures that gross room and frozen section areas are kept clean at all times all tools maintained in assigned areas, etc. u2022 Performs and ensures that tissue storage area/racks are kept clean, organized for rapid retrieval. u2022 Maintains tissue storage area/ racks/ etc. as per guidelines and accreditation requirements. Trains and educates laboratory personnel and residents in the processing of surgical tissues. u2022 Gross room procedures are communicated to staff in a clear and concise manner. u2022 Problems are resolved with appropriate consultation and communication to supervisor and medical staff. u2022 Performance of residents is evaluated in conjunction with managerial and medical staff. Demonstrates knowledge of quality, safety and compliance programs and ensures that these principles are applied in the Gross room. u2022 Compliance guidelines are applied to testing and reporting activities. u2022 Chemicals, hazardous wastes and sharps are handled accurately and safely. u2022 Quality Assurance data is collected and summarized for reporting as needed. u2022 Suggestions are made for Process Improvement initiatives Participates in the development, implementation and maintenance of Surgical Pathology protocols. u2022 Ensures that the procedure manual is updated annually to reflect current methodology, medical staff requests and all federal, state and laboratory accreditation standards. u2022 Electronic information/data systems are used to access and input tissue sample information and departmental communications accurately. u2022 Ensures that accuracy and quality are maintained for activities. EDUCATION: u2022 Associateu2019s degree in laboratory science (chemical or biological) or medical laboratory technology obtained from an accredited institution or; u2022 Education / training equivalent to the above that includes the following: o 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, OR 24 semester hours of science courses that includes 6 semester hours of chemistry, 6 semester hours of biology, and 12 semester hours of chemistry, biology or medical laboratory technology in any combination, AND o Laboratory training including either completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES) EXPERIENCE: u2022 1 year of histology and/or grossing experience required CERTIFICATION/LICENSE: u2022 Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists preferred HCA Healthcare (Corporate) (, based in Nashville, Tennessee, supports a variety of corporate roles from business operations to administrative positions.
