Summary The Staff Physician - Hematology Oncologist's primary role is to provide clinical care in Hematology and Oncology and to oversee the education of Fellows, Residents, and Medical Students within his/her practice area. The 2-page Resume requirement does not apply to this occupational series. For more information, refer to Required Documents below. Responsibilities Duties include, but are not limited to: Administrative: Serve as acting chief of the section (if appropriate), as needed. Provide guidance and support to the Advanced Practice Provider (APP) assigned to Medical Service in their respective areas of expertise. Provide guidance and supervision for the medical students and residents (interns, residents, and/or fellows) assigned to General Medicine House Service/subspecialty services and clinics according to facility standards when assigned to do so by the Chief, Medical Service. Participate in and attends medical center committees as assigned by the Section Chief and/or Chief Medical Service and in his/her absence when requested. Participate in the selection of new staff when requested; prepares for promotions and recognition of outstanding performance of staff he/she collaborates with and/or supervises if applicable. Revise work schedules and assignments to meet frequent, abrupt, and unpredictable changes in prescribed workloads and deadlines to meet patient care, healthcare, and agency needs. Follows agency and Service level expectations for time/attendance and modification of clinical duties for planned leave. Participate in various facility programs designed to enhance and improve the delivery of patient care services, such as Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) teams, as assigned by Section Chief and/or Chief of Medical Service. Clinical: Provide quality patient-centered care to both inpatients and outpatients for adults age 18-65 and older adults age 65+ as assigned by Chief, Medical Service. Has approved clinical privileges in Hematology and Oncology and all areas required to carry out the duties of his/her assignments/responsibilities within Medical Services. Maintains required mandatory training for privileges. Demonstrate sound decision-making skills, both clinical and administrative, which bring credit to the profession and serve to enhance the distinctive and contributory role of physicians. Consistently demonstrate expertise in diagnosing and treating seriously ill, multi-symptomatic patients when clinical assignments so dictate. Complete all medical record documentation, encounters, and trainee supervision attestations in the electronic medical record within prescribed timeframes. Area of expertise: Multiple Myeloma, Malignant Hematology, BMT expertise. Must be eligible for dual recruitment with Academic Affiliate. 5/8 to 6/8th VA effort remaining full time commitment with Academic Affiliate. Develop the initial plan of care and updates the plan, serving as a resource person to less experienced staff, and acts as a leader in developing standards of care. Academic: Participate in the formal education of residents and medical students by presenting teaching rounds, lectures, conferences, etc. Participate in grading sessions for medical students and GME trainees assigned to their services. Demonstrate and trains medical trainees (Students/Residents/Fellows) in medical procedures that are required to provide optimal patient care appropriate to their expertise. Assist in the development and implementation of education and training programs for medical students and residents rotating through the Medical Service's accountable Clinical Services. Meet scholarly activity requirements when applicable, including peer-reviewed publication, discovery, and national professional organization participation. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Selective Service Registration is required for males born after 12/31/1959. Must be proficient in written and spoken English.
