Crssing Guard School Crossing Guards are mainly responsible forproviding school children with safe and protected access to and fromtheir school. They are tasked with communicating and enforcing thepolicies of the Springfield Public Schools to all of those who arewithin the vicinity and make sure children understand and follow therules. School Crossing Guards will attain their on the job training asthey perform their duties. However, they may have to undergo furthertraining in traffic laws and hand signals to direct traffic flow. AllSchool Crossing Guards should be able to interact with children andpedestrians in a friendly manner and be able to react quickly topotential dangers that can affect children. The minimum age of a SchoolCrossing Guard is 21. School Crossing Guards are primarily responsiblefor escorting or directing children/pedestrians across streets andstopping traffic as necessary. This responsibility extends to childrengetting on and off of school buses who must cross streets. SchoolCrossing Guards will control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at streetcrossings. School Crossing Guards will communicate rules of safetycrossing practices to children they are responsible for. School CrossingGuards will learn the location and purpose of street traffic signswithin their assigned area. School Crossing Guards will monitor trafficflow to identify safe gaps through which students/pedestrians may crossstreets. School Crossing Guards are to follow basic principles ofstudent safety at all times. School Crossing Guards are to establishgood relationships with the students, school staff and parents. SchoolCrossing Guards are expected to work in conjunction with school busdrivers to ensure children who must cross streets to board a bus orcross after leaving the bus are safe. School Crossing Guards shouldpossess active listening skills and understand what children, parentsand staff are attempting to communicate to you. You must have theability to convey information effectively. School Crossing Guards shouldpossess problem solving skills incorporating sensitivity along withspeech clarity and perceptiveness. School Crossing Guards should be ableto follow general rules when caring for children. School Crossing Guardsshould have knowledge of public safety and security policies andprocedures. School Crossing Guards should have the ability to assess theneeds of children and those around them. Having knowledge of childbehavior is imperative.
