Job Description

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Responsible for developing and maintaining animalwelfare tools and enrichment programs. This position requires recordkeeping and fulfilling AZA standards. This is an LTE position whichmeans there are no benefits given with the role. Essential Duties Worksin coordination with the Curator of Animals to develop and implementanimal behavior and animal welfare assessment protocols. Participates inthe implementation and review of animal welfare assessment data andparticipates in the animal welfare program evaluation. Assists intraining and direction of assigned volunteers. Analyses and summarizesdata from multiple sources, such as keeper daily reports, ZIMS, andZooMonitor for regular reports. Work in coordination with the Enrichmentand Training coordinator to evaluate current animal training andenrichment offered and its effectiveness and impact on animal welfare.Ensure the NEW Zoo & Adventure Park is in compliance with all AZA andUSDA standards for animal welfare, animal training, and animalbehavior/enrichment programs. Conducts animal observations and surveyszookeeper staff on the effectiveness on enrichment items and compileresults. NON-ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Performs related functions as assigned.Maintains records and observations on collection and reports routinelyto manager on status of individual animals. Inspects and cleans foodstorage, food preparation area, and animal exhibits to insure safe andsanitary conditions for both public and collection specimens. Prepareszoo diets for zoological specimens. Assists in enforcement of parkordinances and public safety. Experience using ZIMS,ZooMonitor, or other relevant programs to collect, track, and analyzeanimal welfare data. Experience in the creation and implementation ofcomplex enrichment projects. Minimal working knowledge of positivereinforcement training. Minimal working knowledge of building andgrounds maintenance. Minimal working knowledge of animal husbandry.Minimal knowledge of horticultural and landscaping methods. Ability toperform heavy manual labor. Ability to operate trucks and powerequipment. Ability to follow detailed instructions. Ability tocommunicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to answerinquiries and complaints effectively with tact and courtesy. Ability tomaintain effective working relationships with staff and the public.Ability to use a firearm and tranquilizer gun. Ability to work therequired hours of the position.
