School Social Worker @ O'Brien Middle School Full-Time Limited TermCounselingSUMMARY DESCRIPTIONUnder general direction of the Principal and Coordinator of School Counseling, the School Social Worker will seek to address barriers to academic success that may exist within the child, home, school, and/or community. School social workers take a strengths-based approach to assessment and seek to intervene across the many systems that interface in the life of a child. By providing intervention strategies and direct services to students and their families, such as screening and assessment, case management, referral and linkage with community resources, crisis intervention and support, as well as individual or group counseling, the School Social Worker will support the mission and goals of the school district in regard to facilitating academic success for all students. School social work services are culturally appropriate and respect the diverse environmental contexts, characteristics, and experiences of the students and families of Washoe County.ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES- Acts as a mandated reporter of child abuse and neglect.- Serves as a liaison between the school/district and students, homes, community agencies or organizations, family services, protective services, courts, law enforcement, doctors, behavioral health providers, and other similar entities in an effort to address barriers to academic success.- Advises and consults with administrators, counselors, and staff on critical issues impacting student achievement.- Works as part of a multi-disciplinary team and collaborates with school counselors, school psychologists, nurses, truancy officers, and other student support personnel to facilitate effective student support services.- Contributes to the ongoing enrichment of the school through participation in program development and professional development opportunities.- Provides individualized direct services to remove barriers that impede academic, social, and emotional success.- Designs and implements behavior management programs for individuals and/or families.- Assists students and parents with identifying and obtaining access to community services and resources.- Assists students and families in obtaining access to medical, psychiatric, psychological, or other similar assessments or evaluations that may assist in identifying barriers to student success and indicate remedial measures.- Facilitates individual, group, or family counseling or support sessions.- Participates in crisis intervention and support teams.- Provides assessment and referral services for students who indicate suicidal or homicidal ideation.- Participates in school counselor training and programs.- Adheres to the code of ethics for social workers.- Maintains confidentiality.- Complies with school and district policies and state and federal laws.- Maintains student records and uses Infinite Campus appropriately.- Provide mediation services;- Advocate for the academic, social and emotional success of pupils;- Assist other educational personnel with case management;- Administer biopsychosocial assessments to pupils, as indicated with WCSD approved tools;- Provide support and consultation to the school, the pupils and the parents or legal guardians of pupils at the school regarding, without limitation, education law and services related to special education;- Provide strengths-based assessments for the school, the pupils and the parents or legal guardians of pupils at the school;- Assist parents or legal guardians with problem solving;- Assist pupils with developing social skills- Performs other duties as assigned.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSEducation/Experience: Any combination of education/experience that could likely provide the required knowledge in qualifying. A t pical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:Education: Bachelor's Degree or a more advanced degree in social work from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).Experience: Three years of social work related experience or experience working with youth or youth serving organizationsLicenses/Certificates: School Social Workers are required to have a Licensed Master Social Worker license issued by the Nevada Board of Examiners for Social Work, a School Social Worker endorsement from the Nevada Department of Education, a School Counseling endorsement through the Nevada Department of Education, and a valid Nevada Driver's License.OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTSNone.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSThree (3) years of experience in social work with children is PETENCIES FOR SUCCESSFUL PERFORMANCE OF JOB DUTIESKnowledge of/ Skill in/Ability to:Social work ethics and practice theories, including family systems theory and techniques.Theories of human behavior and development.Characteristics of the pupil population, including the exceptional child.Strengths based approaches to practice.[]{style=
