Summary: Under general supervision from the ophthalmology medical staff, the Ophthalmic Technician performs a large number of routine technical testing and procedures as well as gathers data and information for patient diagnosis and treatment. The technician works closely and assists the ophthalmologist and resident in the care of the patient. Other information: Required Job Qualifications: u2022 High School Diploma. u2022 Completion of an academic program for ophthalmic technician is a plus. u2022 JCAHPO Certification as ophthalmic assistant (COA) or ophthalmic technician (COT) is a plus but not required. u2022 Must have sound and basic ocular knowledge. u2022 Manual dexterity, communications, precision, and accuracy. u2022 Ability to communicate well with patients and all levels of staff. Preferred Job Qualifications: u2022 Completion of a bacheloru2019s degree and/or advanced medical training is a plus but not required. Responsibilities: u2022 Reviews charts to determine urgency of condition and initiate care as necessary. u2022 Collects all historical and physical data necessary for the medical staff to make clinical therapeutic decisions. u2022 Performs additional measurements of phorias and tropias, near point of convergence, fusion. Familiar with tonography u2022 Performs and records various ocular measurement tests u2022 Designs care plans and implements treatment as delegated by the medical staff. u2022 Expanded role includes adequate knowledge and expertise of all testing available at the center, e.g. topography, AB-scan ultrasonography, ERG (electroretinography), Visante OCT, GVF u2022 Oversees and evaluates other ophthalmic technicians as assigned. u2022 Maintains and updates EPIC EMR knowledge and skills including appointment scheduling. u2022 Expertly take phone calls on eye issues including prescription renewal. u2022 Trains other technical staff as needed. u2022 Maintenance of instrumentation, supplies and drugs. Surveys technical instruments and equipment, implements repair, and arranges for service calls. Also inventories and orders supplies and drugs following protocol and as appropriate. u2022 Participates in research clinical trials as assigned including participating as a mask examiner, performing refraction, visual acuity, etc. Agrees to review the study documentation and certify for each study assigned. u2022 Is able to competently assist, scrub, and circulate for all eye center procedures including Lasik surgery. u2022 Participates in intramural and extramural educational programs as a speaker and teaching assistant. u2022 Participates in departmental research as needed.
