This position is responsible for taking animals vitals, collecting samples, assisting with recovering pets from anesthesia, updating patient records and working closely with the Animal Care Clinic Director and Licensed Veterinary Technicians. Performs a variety of administrative, human resources, financial, and budgetary duties. Assists with safety and emergency planning. Coordinates and promotes events and establishes details for set-up objectives. Ensures quality control for all data entered into a computerized work management system. Performs related duties as needed Essential Functions + Obtain medical histories and relay pertinent information to the Clinic Director/Licensed Veterinary Technician. + Answer phone, email, and in person inquires by shelter personnel, foster families and pet adopters regarding clinic services. + Schedule surgical services and illness/injury exams for shelter pets, including those in foster. + Safely and humanely restrain pets for exams, vaccinations, diagnostics, and surgical preparation. + Observe pets for gross abnormalities, take vitals and report concerns to Clinic Director/Licensed Veterinary Technician. + Collect samples and perform diagnostic services for the Clinic Director/Licensed Veterinary Technician to interpret, document results, and communicate to relevant parties. + Recover pets from anesthesia and involve Clinic Director or Licensed Veterinary Technician as needed. + Clean and sanitize facilities, veterinary equipment, surgical tools, animal enclosures, workspace, lobby, restroom and break areas. + Ensure adequate stocking and inform Clinic Director/Licensed Veterinary Technician of needed supplies. + Update patient records, enter medical notes, and fill prescriptions + Recommend preventative care products for pets based on species and age. + Discharge patients and provide after care instructions. + Reconcile funds received and file medical paperwork + Perform other duties as assigned + Ability to lift 30 pounds, sit, stand, bend, stoop and walk for an entire workday. + Ability to work around pet dander, dust and other allergens. + Must be comfortable handling dogs, cats, and other small animals of varying sizes and temperaments. + Ability to work independently and as part of a team. + Ability to deal with difficult and stressful situations involving animals and customers. + Ability to use computer systems and learn new software. Education/Experience Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency. Junior college, vocational, business, technical or correspondence schools are likely sources. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training. Required: + Two years clerical experience. Preferred: + Experience with veterinary medicine. Additional Information & Requirements Preferred: + Certification in euthanasia by injection for the State of Virginia or willing/able to become certified during first year of employment. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction. + The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education.
