Position Description Program Director/ Sr. Lecturer, Government ? Advanced Academic Programs? Krieger School of Arts & Sciences Report To: Associate Dean, Graduate and Professional Programs Position Description The Center for Data Analytics, Government and Policy, of the Advanced Academic Programs of Johns Hopkins University, based in Washington, D.C., seeks a Faculty Program Director to teach in and provide administrative leadership to the M.A. in Government program. The MA in Governme nt t eaches its graduates to demonstrate expertise and leadership in multiple areas of American Government including A merican political thought, democracy, political institutions, political communication, political parties and elections, and federalism . , It equips students to e valuate the political development of American institution s and the interplay of them in the policymaking process. The Center houses five other degrees in addition to the MA in Government: MS in Data Analytics and Policy, MA in Public Management, MA in Global Security Studies, MS in Intelligence Analysis, and MA in Non-Profit Management. All our programs educate students who wish to apply rigorous academic concepts to policy-related careers. The Faculty Program Director will have significant interaction/collaboration with the Center Director, as well as with the Associate Dean for AAP, other Program Directors, Program Coordinators, AAP staff, and administrators. ? The Program Director reports to the Associate Dean for AAP, the Center Dire ctor, and the Program Chair for the Center .? The Program Director will create and sustain the excellence of the program, will foster and lead ongoing innovation in the curriculum, and will pursue efficiency and excellence in support of the program's faculty and students. Advanced Academic Programs The Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) offers high-quality master's degrees at its Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington, D.C., at JHU's Homewood Campus in Baltimore, Maryland, and online. AAP distinguishes itself through its intensive instructional assistance , selective admissions, and over 60 dedicated full-time faculty. Tenured Krieger School faculty members serve as program chairs to oversee the academic rigor of AAP's graduate offerings. For more information, see? . The Program Director is a full-time, non-tenure-track, 12-month renewable faculty position with the academic title of Senior Lecturer.? The Program Director will have the following faculty and administrative responsibilities: Academic Responsibilities + Teach 3 graduate courses per year including at least one of the required course s as well an elective(s) in an area of specialty in American government or politics . + Teaching re sponsibilities include preparing for and teaching in the c lassroom (online or onsite), using best practices for online teaching, engaging and mentoring students from diverse backgrounds in the learning process, and responding to student questions . + Engag e , advis e , and mentor students from diverse backgrounds in the learning process + Provid e innovative leadership for curriculum design and new course development to ensure the growth and delivery of the program . + Other academic duties normally performed by full-time faculty, such as participating on committees, keeping current in this academic field, attending academic conferences, or contributing to other academic endeavors + University service Administrative Responsibilities + Provid e overall supervision for the MA Government program, including shared management of the program with the Center Director; + Manage an operational budget for the MA in Government + Oversee adjunct faculty hiring, development,?and evaluation; making personnel decisions in consultation with the Center Director, Program Chair and KSAS Dean or designee? + Oversee program admissions processes, including reviewing and approving prospective students' admissions materials? + Schedul e courses and set teaching assignments + Coo rdina te program promotion and outreach, including interacting with outside groups and develop external/internal partnerships + Coord inate with staff in student and faculty services, online education, marketing, finance, and enrollment services departments on operational issues related to program administration? + Other administrative duties as assigned The Program Director role is critical to maintaining the overall high quality of the program. The Program Director must be entrepreneurial, energetic, collaborative, and have a vision to keep the MA in Government program robust and leading-edge . They will bring a passion for education and its power to change lives, especially for part-time and non-residential students, combined with the business acumen necessary to lead a successful professional education enterprise. A track record of building successful in-person and online education programs, as well as skills in instructional design, content development, and instructional technology, are important, as is experience with delivering an excellent student experience. Candidates who have experience teaching and engaging students from diverse backgrounds are of particular interest. ? To be considered, candidates should meet a set of minimum qualifications and ideally meet several additional preferred qualifications . Minimum Qualifications + Ph.D. in Government/Political Science with a focus on American Government and Politics or in a similar relevant field + Five-plus years of higher education teaching experience online and/or at the graduate level + 1 or more years of management or leadership experience in an Associate Director or similar or re lated position + Ability t o teach a wide variety of courses in the field of American Government and Politics and its related subfields + Demonstrated track record of excellence in teaching and innovation in curriculum design? + Strong organizational skills? + Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment with competing demands and multiple deadlines? + Excellent oral and written communication skills Preferred Qualifications + A record of scholarly or professional publications or analogous classified work + Experience managing a degree program + 2 or more years of related professional work experience outside of academia, which could be relevant government or public work or outside consulting or collaborative work within fields related to governmen t + 3 or more years of management or leadership experience in an Associate Director or similar or re lated position + Extensive connections in the practitioner community, preferably both governmental and non-governmental Salary: $92,000 - $120,000 The position will remain open until filled.
