DescriptionSUMMARY OBJECTIVEThis position combines the hands-on expertise of a modern software/AI engineer with the strategic mindset of a civic innovation partner. The ideal candidate is execution-focused yet highly collaborative, capable of designing and building AI solutions while also serving as a key technical advisor to the CAIO, Metro Technology Services, and department leadership. They will prototype and integrate AI tools, translate operational needs into practical, scalable solutions, and help shape the cityu2019s emerging AI platform and standards. Equally comfortable working in code and engaging with stakeholders, this individual should possess strong communication and presentation skills, enabling them to explain AI capabilities, limitations, and risks in clear, actionable terms to staff, executives, and community partners.Examples of DutiesESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS u2022 Partners with the CAIO, AI Product Lead, and department leadership to identify high impact opportunities where AI can measurably improve service delivery, efficiency, and equity. u2022 Designs and develops AI-powered solutions (e.g., Q&A assistants, document intelligence, routing and triage, workflow automations) that align with strategic priorities in zoning, permitting, open records, 311/Metro311, and public safety. u2022 Serves as a technical advisor on AI capabilities, constraints, and risks, helping shape solution architectures, vendor selection, and implementation approaches. u2022 Evaluates and integrates third-party AI platforms and tools, ensuring they meet Metrou2019s security, data, and interoperability standards and can scale beyond initial pilots. u2022 Collaborates with data, security, and infrastructure teams to define technical patterns, reference architectures, and reusable components that form the foundation of Louisville Metrou2019s AI platform. u2022 Designs and executes experiments, proofs-of-concept, and pilot evaluations; analyzes performance, failure modes, and operational fit, and recommends refinements or go/no-go decisions. u2022 Communicates complex technical concepts in clear, accessible language to nontechnical stakeholders: contributes to documentation, training materials, and transparency reports as needed. u2022 Develops and maintains technical documentation, runbooks, and handoff materials to support long-term operations, supportability, and governance of AI solutions.Minimum RequirementsMINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: u2022 Bacheloru2019s degree in computer science, data science, engineering, information systems, or a related field. u2022 Four (4) years of professional experience in software engineering, machine learning engineering, data engineering, or applied AI development or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: u2022 Must possess and maintain a valid state driveru2019s license with an acceptable driving history.u2022 Mustu00a0submitu00a0tou00a0fingerprintingu00a0foru00a0criminalu00a0history check.u2022u00a0Mustu00a0completeu00a0theu00a0annualu00a0securityu00a0awareness training.PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement. u2022 Performs sedentary work that involves walking or standing some of the time and involves exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or sustained keyboard operations.UNAVOIDABLE HAZARDS (WORK ENVIRONMENT): Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken. u2022 None.AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT COMPLIANCE Louisville Metro Government is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
