Director of Finance (Nonprofit)Title: Director of FinanceReports To: Executive Director / Chief Executive OfficerDepartment: Finance & AccountingFLSA Status: ExemptThis is a hybrid role. Applicants must reside in the DMV area (District of Columbia, Maryland, or Virginia) to be considered.Position SummaryThe Director of Finance is responsible for overseeing and executing the organizations day-to-day financial operations, with a strong emphasis on nonprofit accounting, compliance, and reporting. This role blends Director-level leadership with hands-on Controller responsibilities, ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of all financial activities.The Director of Finance provides operational financial leadership, maintains strong internal controls, and ensures compliance with nonprofit, federal, and grant-related requirements. This role is highly execution-focused and is well-suited for a nonprofit finance professional who thrives in a hands-on environment and values mission-driven work.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesFinancial Operations & Accounting OversightDirect and perform monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processesEnsure accurate general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting documentationSupervise accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processing, and cash receiptsMaintain standardized closing schedules and checklists to ensure timely completionFinancial Reporting & AnalysisPrepare and present monthly financial statements, budget-to-actual reports, and variance analyses to leadership and program teamsProduce financial reports for executive leadership, program leadership, and Board or Finance Committee reviewSupport preparation of audited financial statements and annual financial disclosuresRespond to internal and external financial reporting requestsBudgeting & Financial MonitoringLead the annual budgeting process for organizational and program-level budgets in collaboration with department managersMonitor actual revenues and expenditures against approved budgets, providing variance analysis and recommendationsSupport program managers with budget tracking, forecasting, and financial adjustmentsMaintain documentation supporting budget assumptions, revisions, and approvalsCompliance, Audit & Internal ControlsEnsure compliance with GAAP, nonprofit accounting standards, federal regulations, and grant requirementsServe as primary finance liaison for independent auditors, DCAA auditors, and internal reviewsOversee preparation and filing of Form 990, payroll tax filings, and applicable state registrationsMaintain, document, and enforce accounting policies, procedures, and internal controlsCash Management & Financial AdministrationMonitor cash flow, and oversee bank and account reconciliationsManage banking relationships and authorized financial transactionsOversee credit card programs, expense reporting, and reimbursement processesSupport insurance renewals and the financial aspects of employee benefits administrationFederal Grants & Contract AccountingOversee financial tracking and reporting for federal contracts and grants, ensuring compliance with funder requirementsSupport indirect cost rate calculations, cost submissions, and required compliance reportingEnsure accurate labor distribution, timekeeping, and payroll allocation reporting for grant-funded activitiesTeam Leadership & CoordinationSupervise and mentor accounting and finance staff assigning operational responsibilities and ensuring professional developmentEnsure work is completed accurately, timely, and in compliance with established policies and proceduresProvide training, guidance, and oversight to promote consistency and compliance across finance operations fostering a culture of continuous improvement and adherence to best practicesQualificationsBachelors degree in Accounting or Finance requiredCertified Public Accountant (CPA) strongly preferred7-10 years of progressive nonprofit accounting and financial management experienceDemonstrated experience with nonprofit audits, federal grants, and compliance requirementsStrong proficiency in Excel and nonprofit accounting systemsPreferred Experience and AttributesBackground in mission-driven or grant-funded nonprofit organizationsHands-on experience functioning in a Controller or senior accounting roleAbility to balance leadership responsibilities with detailed accounting workStrong commitment to accuracy, accountability, and ethical financial practicesCompensation and IncentivesWe offer a salary range of $105,000 to $150,000, based on skills and experience. We offer competitive sign-on bonus of $5,000, subject to standard eligibility requirements.
