Assistant Supervisor of Fleet Services Print ( Apply ufeff Assistant Supervisor of Fleet Services Salary $68,158.06 - $91,598.73 Annually Location Ohio 45202, OH Job Type Full-time Classified Job Number 26-02516 Department Public Services Opening Date 02/04/2026 Closing Date 2/18/2026 11:59 PM Eastern + Description + Benefits + Questions General Statement of Duties Supervises and coordinates fleet repair and maintenance program activities and operations within the Fleet Services Division; coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, outside agencies and the general public; and provides highly responsible and complex staff assistance to a Fleet Services Supervisor and management staff. Minimum Qualifications (KSAs) (Illustrative only. Any one position may not require all of the listed KSAs nor do the listed examples include all the KSAs which may be required.) Knowledge of: Operational characteristics, services and activities of a comprehensive fleet service program. Modern and complex principles and practices of fleet service and maintenance. Methods and techniques of advanced automobile mechanics and repair. Welding and machining practices. Basic mathematics. Basic English grammar, usage and spelling. Safety guidelines, practices and procedures. City personnel procedures; union contract; and Fleet Services Division policies and procedures. Basic computer operations. Principles of supervision, management, motivation, training and performance evaluation. Pertinent federal, state and local laws, codes and regulations. Skill to: Operate a personal computer, calculator, and other office equipment. Develop and follow schedules and work plans. Diagnose a variety of automotive repair needs and establish reasonable repair estimates. Prepare clear and concise reports. Operate motorized equipment to evaluate performance and adherence to specifications. Operate a personal computer to generate reports and file information. Use established filing systems efficiently and effectively. Ability to: Implement and maintain positive employee relations. Promote and maintain highest integrity throughout all personnel. Analyze and manage effective EEO/AA programs. Supervise, direct and coordinate the work of lower-level staff. Supervise, train and evaluate staff. Interpret and explain pertinent City policies and procedures. Understand and apply mechanical principles. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Analyze and solve complex problems. Read and interpret complex manuals, guides and diagrams. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including City and other government officials, community groups and the general public. Required Education and Experience Each applicant must have two years experience as an Automotive Mechanic-Crew Chief in a municipal, government, or large fleet operation. OR Four years of experience as a lead or senior-level Automotive Mechanic in a fleet maintenance, transportation, or public works setting, including at least two years in a supervisory or crew lead role. OTHER REQUIREMENTS Must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License. Must have certain ASE auto repair certifications, as required. Must be an excellent communicator and team builder. MILITARY EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE EVALUATION Military education and experience may be substituted for college level course work at the lower and upper division baccalaureate and graduate levels and apprenticeship training at the vocational certificate level on a case by case basis based on the American Council on Education (ACE) Military Guide recommendations. Working and Physical Conditions Environmental Conditions:Predominately indoor garage and office environments; exposure to office computer screens; exposure to fumes from auto exhaust, gasoline, oil, cleaning solvents; exposure to noise and vibrations in garage/shop. Physical Conditions: Duties require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting, standing and walking for prolonged periods of time; moderate and heavy lifting and carrying; general manual dexterity required; must be able to review repairs in all parts of vehicles; must be able to operate assigned vehicles. Examples of Work Performed (Illustrative only. Any one position within this classification may not include all of the duties listed nor do the listed examples include all of the tasks which may be performed.) Coordinate the organization, staffing and operational activities for assigned garage/shop. Assist in coordinating the work plan for assigned vehicle maintenance and repair activities and services; assign work activities and projects, arrange work schedules; fill out repair orders and complete parts requisitions; monitor work flow to minimize equipment down time. Train, motivate and evaluate personnel; provide or coordinate staff training; work with employees to correct deficiencies; check and sign employee time cards; maintain attendance and performance records; complete necessary personnel actions related to payroll, grievances, union issues, etc. Oversee work in progress and completed repair/maintenance projects; inspect work for quality and completeness to include vehicle testing when appropriate. Contact vendors to obtain auto parts and specialty replacement parts; make arrangements for repairs under warranty as appropriate; coordinate work to be done by outside contractors; pick up and deliver parts as special cases arise. Contact clients and vendors via telephone; notify clients if costs are expected to exceed previous estimates and explain reason for the higher cost; field questions from City agencies and the general public. Ensure that all safety procedures are followed in assigned garage/shop area; train mechanics in proper use of tools; make sure garage/shop and vehicles are cleaned regularly. Review contracts with vendors; make recommendations for new equipment/supply purchases; review contract specifications; update contracts as necessary. Maintain appropriate levels of stock parts (including tires) as required; oversee removal of out-dated stock according to established procedure. Fill in for supervisory personnel as directed. Operate a computer as necessary to maintain accurate records and files; generate correspondence as required. Assist those contacted in the course of duty in an effective, efficient and professional manner. Perform related duties as assigned. Probationary Period Twelve months Supervision Exercised Exercises direct supervision over Automotive Mechanic Crew Chief, Automotive Mechanic, Automotive Mechanic Helper, Welder and other garage personnel as required.
