Applied Materialsu2019 facility onsite at Wayne State University is seeking a highly qualified candidate to work under an industrial/academic collaboration that will focus on the creation of new thin film deposition process technologies. Location : _Fully in office 5-days a week_ at our facility located in Wayne State University; Detroit, Michigan USA Approximate Start Date : May/June 2026 thru August/September 2026 (12-week intern program) Key Responsibilities: + Design, collect, and interpret process data + Generate weekly reports on deposition experiments + Troubleshoot moderately complex problems on deposition hardware + Measure thin film properties, organize analytical data for review and interpretation + Interact with colleagues to resolve moderately difficult process issues/problems under general supervision + Operate independently with minimum level of guidance and direction + Present a summary of learnings to the broader team at the end of the appointment Minimum Qualifications: + Student must be pursuing a MS or PhD degree in Material Science, Chemical Engineering, or a related field, and be in good academic standing at their university + Experience with vapor phase deposition techniques, preferably atomic layer deposition + Demonstrated proficiency in electron microscopy and film characterization techniques such as XPS, XRD, XRF, TEM, FTIR, etc. Preferred Qualifications : + Semiconductor-specific academic experience and publication record of related research + Knowledge of thin film deposition hardware and process troubleshooting + Experience in thin-film deposition, and/or multiple materials characterization methods such as X-ray (XPS, XRF, XRD) and electron microscopy (TEM, SEM) + Flexible and adaptable mindset who thrives in a results-driven culture + Able to solve complex problems and take a new perspective on existing solutions + Ability to exercise judgment based on the analysis of multiple sources of information Additional Information Time Type: Full time Employee Type: Intern / Student Travel: Relocation Eligible: Yes The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on multiple factors including location, hire grade, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and with consideration of internal equity of our current team members. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.
