Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:u2022 Builds, repairs, and installs such items as counters, cabinets, benches, work stations, partitions, floors, doors, windows, building framework, roofs, and trim following verbal or written instructions utilizing the tools of the carpentry trade and following standard carpentry techniques;u2022 Installs and repairs ceiling and floor tiles;u2022 Does general millwork; may build cabinets, furniture, and other wooden equipment in the shop using woodworking machines;u2022 Maintains shop machinery;u2022 May conduct inspections of the facility to determine maintenance needs and recommend priorities for repair based on the nature of the maintenance problem;u2022 May supervise and instruct others in the construction and repair of structures and other wooden items;u2022 May draw rough sketches or prepare plans to scale from verbal or written instructions to accomplish a project;u2022 May review plans and recommend and order the kind, quantity, and quality of materials to be used;u2022 Install, repair, and maintain locks, locksets, and keys for doors & furniture. Update inventory as needed; u2022 Assembles materials, tools, and equipment required to accomplish the work according to plan;u2022 Lays out the work for staff and performs such skilled tasks as laying out the cutting of roof trusses and stairs, hanging doors, and installing hardware;u2022 Observes and inspects work in progress and when completed to ensure that the job is done properly; andu2022 Coordinate with facilities management to secure, issue, and maintain keys, especially for secured areas. Minimum Qualifications MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Non-Competitive Appointment to Trades Specialist (Carpenter): Candidates must have four years of full-time experience in carpentry work under a skilled tradesperson which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, or an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in carpentry at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Carpenter) traineeship, or a two-year carpenter training, apprenticeship, OR equivalent program such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program.Successful completion of the traineeship and the training program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work. Course work must be completed with an average of u201cCu201d or better. Additionally, successful completion of the traineeship also includes 4,000 hours of on-the-job training.Non-Competitive Appointment to Trades Specialist (Carpenter) Trainee 1: Candidates must have full-time permanent service in a position allocated at Grade 12 or below which is primarily engaged in the performance of unskilled and/or semiskilled labor and trades tasks ANDu2022 Be 18 years of age or older;u2022 Possess a High School diploma or general equivalency diploma recognized by the New York State Education Department; andu2022 Be proficient in English and math.When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.It is essential that candidates clearly and concisely indicate exactly how they meet the above minimum qualifications in their resume.
