Underwriting Manager - Professional Liability

Vela Insurance Services provides specialized Excess and Surplus Lines Casualty and Professional Liability insurance solutions in the following market segments: Construction, Specialty Casualty, & Professional Liability. We offer national service and local knowledge to our exclusive wholesale broker network and the businesses they serve.Reporting to the Segment Leader, the Underwriting Manager is responsible for leading a team of Broker Specialists and Renewal Underwriters within our (PL/Spec Cas/ Const) segment and driving the results for the group. The manager ensures underwriting excellence, supports profitable growth, strengthens broker relationships, and reinforces Vela’s underwriting strategies and champions our sales culture.Overall management responsibility for the assigned teamLeading the team of underwriters in driving premium, rate, and profitability goalsAchieving premium, rate and profitability goalsAssisting in refining and updating the Underwriting GuidelinesTraining, coaching and developing team membersParticipating in the sourcing, interviewing and hiring of new team membersDrive broker engagement strategies to enhance new business growth and renewal retentionApplying analytics to distribution management Maintaining own book of businessMinimum of 5+ years’ commercial lines underwriting experienceExperience in and understanding of the E&S competitive marketplace Demonstrated technical expertise and product knowledge in Manufacturing and Products A drive to be creative and innovative in advancing the success of the assigned team/ region Willingness to challenge the status quo and embrace changeA strong desire to compete - and to winA team player approachStrong communication skillsAdvanced analytical and creative problem-solving skillsFour (4) year College Degree, or commensurate experience and trainingProfessional Insurance designations preferred: CPCU, CRIS, ASLI, AU
