California: $19.71 - $23.46/hr Colorado: $17.93 - 19.71/hr Connecticut: $20.70 - $21.59/hr Illinois: $18.82 - $20.70/hr Rhode Island: $19.71/hr Maryland: $17.93 - $21.59/hr Minnesota: $19.71/hr Nevada: $18.82 - 19.71/hr New Jersey: $20.70 - $21.59/hr Puerto Rico: $17.93/hr Rhode Island: $19.71/hr Washington State: $18.82 - $21.59/hr Washington DC: $21.59 Other states: $16.94 - $23.46/hr SUMMARY OF JOB PURPOSE AND FUNCTION The primary purpose and function of the Extern is to u2018shadowu2019 the mentor veterinarian in order to observe and take part in clinical procedures and to gain various firsthand veterinary experience and knowledge. ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS u00b7 Live and exemplify the Five Principles of Mars, Inc. within self and team. u00b7 Meet with mentor to identify program expectations and create learning goals. u00b7 Learn all aspects of hospital organization and function by observing and participating in procedures with the mentor doctor. u00b7 Ensure the safety of pets, clients and associates by utilizing safe restraining techniques, following standard protocols, and maintaining clean, sterile and organized treatment areas, exam rooms and labs. u00b7 Provide professional, efficient and exceptional service at all times. This includes performing procedures that do not require veterinarian assistance (depending on skill level), performing surgical procedures in the presence of mentor veterinarian, completing preparatory work for other procedures, ensuring that clients and pets are comfortable in the hospital, monitoring hospitalized or surgical pets. u00b7 Act as the extra eyes, ears and hands for the veterinarian to ensure the best quality pet care. u00b7 Mentor and be mentored through the objectives of the Externship Program. u00b7 Other job duties as assigned. This position requires special hours including working weekends and evenings. u00b7 The noise level in the work environment is moderately high. u00b7 Requires sufficient ambulatory skills in order to perform duties while at hospital. u00b7 Ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and climb as well as manipulate (lift, carry, move) up to 50 pounds. u00b7 Requires good hand-eye coordination, finger-hand-arm dexterity with the ability to reach and grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard and operate equipment. u00b7 Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. u00b7 Associate is routinely exposed to a variety of pets that may bite or scratch, and on occasion, exposed to anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards and medication/controlled substances. EXPERIENCE, EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING u00b7 Bacheloru2019s degree in veterinary medicine or related area required. u00b7 Enrolled in a DVM/VMD program at a college of veterinary medicine. BENEFITS + Sick Time: In localities covered by our Sick Plans, eligible Associates will accrue Sick Time based on their hours worked. Associates may accumulate up to Plan maximums, unless state or local law requires otherwise. Hours are carried over from one year to the next on January 31st.
