We currently have one vacancy in the Code Enforcement Department in which hiring will begin immediately following the close of this recruitment. This recruitment will also establish a list for future vacancies, which will be filled as they occur. This is an internal recruitment to provide a promotional opportunity for all qualified current classified City of Reno employees. Examples of Essential Functions + Respond to and investigate alleged violations of minimum housing standards and applicable zoning, nuisance, building, health and safety codes, ordinances, regulations and requirements; interview complainant and witnesses; document activities; collect photographic and other evidence of violations. + Inspect single and multi-family homes, industrial and commercial buildings, and vacant lots and properties to ensure compliance with applicable zoning, nuisance, building, health and safety codes, ordinances and regulations; issue notices of violation as necessary. + Conduct investigations to determine the approved conditional uses of property; research ownership and take action to enforce City codes; prepare staff reports and make presentations to the City Council, Neighborhood Advisory Boards, and Redevelopment Agency. + Patrol the City to detect hazardous or unpermitted sign installations. + Advise property owners, contractors, and other responsible parties of code violations and changes needed to conform with standards; conduct follow-up inspections to determine if code deficiencies have been resolved; issue notices of violation, administrative citations, misdemeanor citations, notices, and orders. + Procure, supervise, and document abatements. + Prepare records and reports for judicial proceedings; may testify in hearings and court cases. + Interpret and explain ordinances, laws, rules, regulations, and codes to citizens, businesses, and other entities. + Develop and foster proactive education and outreach programs to encourage community participation in code enforcement operations and reduce code enforcement violations. + Coordinate activities with federal, state, and local agencies. + Maintain a variety of accurate and detailed databases, logs, records, reports and files regarding inspection activities, code violations and resulting actions; prepare correspondence, documentation, routine reports and weekly status reports as required. + Perform related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications The following minimum qualifications are required to be met at the time of application. Education: Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. Work Experience: Two years of increasingly responsible work experience in the enforcement of codes, regulations and ordinances related to building, zoning, and land use that would demonstrate the attainment of the knowledge, skills and abilities. Substitution: Bachelor's degree or higher in a related field may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience. License and Certificate: + Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license. + Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid certification as a Code Enforcement Officer from the International Code Council (ICC) or American Association of Code Enforcement (AACE) within one year of employment.
