Summary The Registered Nurse - Operating Room(OR) Nurse Educator position is with the South Texas Veterans Health Care System. Duty location is at the Audie L. Murphy Memorial Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, TX. Responsibilities Designs, implements, and evaluate education and training programs for perioperative nursing staff, ensuring alignment with evidence-based practice, AORN standards, and VHA policies. Develops, maintains, and enhances perioperative and unit-based competencies, including annual validations and specialty-specific skill sets. Leads and supports training programs related to specialized surgical services such as robotics, LASER, implants (biological and non-biological), Unlicensed Assistive Personnel (UAP) program and emerging technologies. Coordinates and delivers in-service education related to new equipment, policy and procedure updates, and regulatory requirements. Serves as subject matter expert in circulating nurse practice, aseptic technique, medication and patient safety in the perioperative environment. Facilitates orientation and onboarding of new OR staff, including development of individualized learning plans and tracking of progress and completion. Collaborates with Simulation Lab, Nursing Education, Hospital Education, and Sterile Processing Services to support interdisciplinary education and training initiatives. Coordinates with civilian and military surgical technologist programs for student placement, orientation, and curriculum support. Develops patient education materials relevant to perioperative care. Utilize nursing informatics and learning management systems to track competencies, education outcomes, and compliance. Completes education/training reports and serves as subject expert matter related to perioperative nursing documentation, policy and professional development processes. Demonstrates excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills. Prepare and maintain monthly and annual reports related to staff competencies, education initiatives, and program outcomes. Supports High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles, Pathway to Excellence initiatives, and readiness for Joint Commission and Office of Inspector General (OIG) surveys. Demonstrates experience in staff education, competency development, and clinical education. Participates in quality improvement initiatives, root cause analyses, and performance improvement activities related to perioperative services. When assigned to patient care, provide safe, high-quality nursing care consistent with scope of practice and organizational standards. The Nurse Educator builds relationships and collaborates with nursing, surgery, medicine and other service lines. Strong knowledge of regulatory standards, accreditation requirements, and perioperative best practices. The Nurse Educator reports directly to the Chief Nurse, Perioperative Nursing Service care line Performs other duties as assigned.
