DeBakey VA Medical Center (MEDVAMC) in Houston, Texas, one of the most complex facilities in the VA healthcare system. The candidate will provide services of a Cardiothoracic attending staff surgeon. They will consult on a wide range of patients, order appropriate tests, evaluate the medical needs, and direct the course of cardiothoracic surgical treatment. They will perform cardiothoracic operations with the assistance of residents, fellows, and physician assistants, and will be responsible for supervising, teaching, and directing the post-operative care and follow-up. The division of cardiothoracic surgery at the MEDVAMC has a tradition of excellence and innovation in patient care, education, and research. We specialize in the treatment of complex adult cardiac surgery and offer the entire range of CT surgery, including coronary artery bypass, valve repair and replacement, aortic aneurysm surgery, re-operations, transcatheter procedures, surgery for advanced heart failure such as durable and temporary mechanical circulatory support, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), heart transplantation, and also a general thoracic surgical practice including minimally invasive lung resection. The candidate should have a commitment to research and education. Previous experience in teaching students and training residents and fellows in cardiothoracic surgery is important because we put major emphasis on the training of future cardiothoracic surgeons. The candidate will have academic appointment with the Baylor College of Medicine and should demonstrate potential for a prominent level of academic accomplishment. The candidate should demonstrate high degree of technical proficiency in performing the entire range of cardiothoracic surgery. Since the MEDVAMC is a major referral center in the VA system, the desired candidate should have experience with complex cardiothoracic operations, including re-operative cardiac surgery, coronary artery bypass with multi-arterial grafts, aortic aneurysm surgery, aortic root procedures such as valve-sparing root replacement, and mitral valve repair. The MEDVAMC was the first VA cardiac surgery program to perform TAVR and is the only VA to have an in-house heart failure program. As such, the candidate should have TAVR experience and should also have previous exposure to mechanical circulatory support, VAD implantation, and heart transplantation. We prefer the candidate to have at least 3 years of experience in the field but will consider new graduates with excellent training.
