The Central SterilizationTechnician performs effective and efficient customer service bymaintaining quality and aseptic control procedures includingdecontamination, processing, inspection, assembly, packaging,sterilization, storage and distribution of sterile instruments,equipment and supplies. Duties and Responsibilities 1. Appropriatelyprepares all dental instrumentation and handpieces for manual ormechanical decontamination to ensure items are not damaged duringprocessing. 2. Appropriately selects/uses correct cleaning method(manual or mechanical) and cleaning chemicals required for each item.Accurately loads/unloads and operates washers, sonic cleaners and cartwasher to ensure items are clean and safe for handling. Verifies correctcycle parameters. Recognizes faulty equipment operations and refers toSupervisor, Lead or Director. 3. Accurately identifies, inspects andassembles dental instrumentation and handpieces for all clinic areas toensure availability and safe and efficient operation during patient careprocedures. Recognizes nonfunctional equipment or generalinstrumentation and refers issues to Supervisor, Lead, or Director.(Inspection/Assembly). 4. Appropriately selects and uses correct typeand method of packaging for dental instrumentation, equipment andsupplies to prevent potential damage and assist in proper sterilantpenetration. 5. Completely operates all sterilization equipment andcompletes required documentation. Monitors and verifies mechanical,chemical and biological indicators to ensure sterilization parametershave been achieved. Performs recall if parameters are not met. 6.Efficiently selects instrumentation, equipment and supplies and preparesand delivers case carts to ensure all items have integrity and arereadily available for patient care. Collects lab coats and towels fromthe clinic and office areas and prepare them for linen pick-up. Sortunusable gowns for replacement. 7. Routinely updates knowledge onprocessing practices, procedures and products. If certified, maintainscertification. 8. Consistently verifies accuracy of al tasks performedand participates in process improvement efforts to increase customersatisfaction. 9. Participates in projects or groups assigned bySupervisor or Director. 10. Attends required meetings and activities atthe Dental School or University. 11. Actively supports and participatesin orientation of new employees. 12. Performs other functions assignedby Supervisor or Director. 13. Must have flexible schedule becauseoccasionally work hours may change due to departmental need, studenttesting and weekend exams. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Highschool education or equivalent required. Good communication,flexibility, interpersonal relations and customer service skills.Ability to work in a team environment. Able to support the department,Dental School and University mission and values required. Computerskills in Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of instrument trackingsystems helpful. The ability to push and pull carts along with standing,walking and lifting of objects. Speed and efficiency are essential.Preferred Knowledge, Skills and Abilities One to three years ofexperience. Demonstrated knowledge of the principles of microbiology,decontamination, and sterilization and infection control is preferred.Central Service Technician or Surgical Technician program completion andor experience desired.
