Summary The Syracuse VA Medical Center is seeking a Physician Assistant for the Orthopedic clinic. Responsibilities The Physician Assistant will work in the Orthopedic Section - Surgery Service, within the Surgery and Diagnostic Care Line at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. Major duties include, but are not limited to: OR duties: Obtaining the patient's consent and updated history Physical and scrubbing in OR cases as first assist Perform suturing and wound closures Non OR duties: Perform physician assistant care management - gathering patient histories, and conducting physical examinations, clinical assessment, and care of out-patients per independent licensure Prescribe medications within defined licensure, order all appropriate diagnostic studies, order and timely follow-up on patient tests, consultations, and procedures Provide patients and families with education on preventive care, medical conditions, and the use of prescribed treatments Perform daily rounds to observe and document the patient's medical progress (depending upon the service need for inpatient care) Consult with the responsible provider of any significant changes in the patient's condition Document interim summaries of the patient's medical record with timely documentation as required by hospital policy Provide education and recommendations as required to all members of the patient care team Act in the capacity of the patient advocate for any staff, patient or family concerns Support members of the Orthopedics team and perform other duties as mutually agreed upon Provide education to residents to ensure understanding of VA policies and daily operational processes/procedures; practice within licensure and in accordance with VA Bylaws, Rules and Regulations, and follow Joint Commission standards Syracuse VAMC is a major teaching affiliate of Upstate Medical University orthopedic residency. As such, the PA will be working closely with orthopedic residents in coordinating care of the veterans in all three settings - inpatient, outpatient and OR. Work Schedule: Full time, Monday - Friday 8:00am - 4:30pm (or as determined by the needs of the service) Telework: Not Available Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
