Job Description Summary: This position is responsible for strategic leadership, technical oversight, regulatory compliance, and continuous advancement of the physical environment in a healthcare setting. This role encompasses master-level expertise in healthcare facility operations, life safety compliance, building systems engineering, and infrastructure lifecycle management. This position serves as a liaison with the organizationu2019s environmental health and safety team to ensure NFPA, CMS, Joint Commission, EPA, local, state, or other federal agencies rules or codes are met. This position also serves as the safety department liaison to assist in the alignment of facilities and alignment of the forementioned agencies and governmental oversight. Provides life safety support to the campus safety and facilities teams to ensure the safest environment for patients, visitors, and associates. This position will also review documentation, provide support for interim life safety measures, and provide expert guidance for any life safety device failures or utility failures that would impact patients or associates. Responsibilities And Duties: 1. Strategic life Safety & Physical Environment Provide executive-level direction over all life safety & regulatory compliance in facility engineering systems, including HVAC, electrical distribution, emergency power generation, medical gas, domestic water, steam, plumbing, and building automation systems. Lead multi-million-dollar life safety & critical infrastructure meetings, including master facility planning, risk assessments, and system redundancy strategies. Provide insight in facility condition assessments (FCA) and long-term asset replacement schedules in alignment with ASHE and FGI guidelines. Direct commissioning, retro-commissioning, and integration of advanced building systems with a focus on energy resilience, life-cycle cost optimization, and patient-centered safety/vendor validation. 2. Life Safety & Code Compliance Serve as the organizational Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) liaison for NFPA101 Life Safety Code, NFPA 99 Health Care Facilities Code, NFPA 70 (NEC), NFPA 110 (Emergency Power), and related standards. Maintain rigorous Joint Commission Environment of Care (EC), Life Safety (LS), and Emergency Management (EM) compliance programs. Lead fire protection and detection system strategies, including performance-based fire modeling, fire damper inspections, and compliance-driven fire barrier management. Develop and oversee centralized compliance for life safety drawings, Statement of Conditions (SOC), and electronic compliance platforms. 3. Technical Operations Oversight Oversee regulatory insight for all preventive and predictive maintenance of all mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems using CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management Systems). Provide expert-level troubleshooting and root cause analysis on complex utility failures, energy distribution imbalances, and environmental system deficiencies. Manage utility failure response drills and real-time recovery strategies for mission-critical hospital functions (e.g., surgery, ICU, imaging). Integrate HVAC infection control measures (e.g., pressure relationships, filtration, ASHRAE 170 compliance) to support clinical operations. 4. Safety & Risk Management Conduct advanced risk assessments related to fire safety, hazardous materials, emergency power, Legionella/waterborne pathogens, and energy reliability. Attend the Environment of Care/Life Safety Committee, ensuring cross-disciplinary alignment with clinical, emergency preparedness, and infection prevention leaders. Oversee construction and renovation projects for compliance with Interim Life Safety Measures (ILSM), Infection Control Risk Assessments (ICRA), and Preconstruction Risk Assessments (PCRA). 5. Leadership, Training & Collaboration Partner with a multidisciplinary facilities team (engineering, maintenance, electricians, plumbers, HVAC technicians, safety officers) with a culture of technical mastery and accountability. Mentor leaders in facility operations, succession planning, and advanced compliance methodologies. Collaborate with external engineering consultants, regulatory inspectors, and contractors on design, construction, and code interpretation. Act as the executive technical advisor to C-suite leadership on infrastructure risk, capital investment, and environmental resilience. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree (Required) Additional Job Description: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS + Bacheloru2019s degree in interdisciplinary studies, mechanical/electrical engineering, Facilities Management, or related technical discipline. + Experience: 10+ years progressive leadership in healthcare Facilities, life safety, and building systems engineering. + Demonstrated mastery of hospital utility systems, including emergency power, chilled water, steam distribution, BAS/EMS, and medical gas. + Expert knowledge of NFPA codes, ASHRAE standards, NEC, FGI Guidelines, OSHA, EPA, and state/local healthcare regulations. + Mastery of system redundancy, failure mode effects analysis (FMEA), and root cause analysis methodologies.
