Welder Mechanic / Journeyman Fitter-Fabricator Location: SW Portland, OR Pay Rate: $30u2013$36/hour (DOE) About the Role We are seeking an experienced Journeyman Fitter/Fabricator to join our team supporting large-scale structural steel and bridge fabrication projects . This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled tradesperson who takes pride in precision work, thrives in a fast-paced fabrication environment, and wants to be part of landmark infrastructure projects across the region. The ideal candidate brings strong layout and fitting expertise, the ability to read and interpret complex blueprints, and hands-on experience with structural welding and steel fabrication. Key Responsibilities + Perform layout and fitting of structural steel components and bridge girders with speed, accuracy, and minimal supervision + Read and interpret complex blueprints, drawings, and technical specifications + Identify steel shapes and accurately lay out beams, columns, weld sizes, piece marks, and direction marks + Use fabrication tools and equipment including welding machines, grinders, cutting torches, overhead cranes, and precision measuring tools + Conduct quality checks to ensure proper fit, alignment, and compliance with project specifications + Collaborate with welders, fabricators, and project managers to meet production goals and deadlines + Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment in compliance with all safety standards + Assist with troubleshooting and problem-solving during fabrication and installation Required Skills & Experience + Journeyman-level experience as a Fitter/Fabricator , preferably in structural steel and bridge work + Strong proficiency in layout and fitting techniques + Advanced blueprint reading and interpretation skills + Solid understanding of structural welding processes , with the ability to weld as needed + Knowledge of relevant industry codes and standards + Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team + High attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship + Physical ability to perform demanding work in a fabrication shop environment Preferred Qualifications + AWS certifications such as D1.1, D1.5, and/or D1.8 (highly desirable) Why Join Us? + Work on some of the largest and most complex bridge and structural steel projects in the region + Join a respected company with a legacy dating back to 1949 , recognized as one of the premier steel fabricators in the Western U.S. + Be part of a skilled team of 300+ professionals known for excellence in structural steel, bridge fabrication, and project delivery + Diverse project portfolio including bridges, commercial buildings, hospitals, stadiums, and industrial facilities + Opportunity to convert to a direct employee and join Ironworkers Local 516 , offering: + Higher wages + Pension and retirement benefits + Family medical coverage + Strong union representation and respect for the trade Company-Provided Benefits Include: + Medical insurance with four coverage tiers + Brand-new gloves, welding hood, and hard hat + Stipend for steel-toe boots and prescription safety lenses Work Environment & Schedule + Work in a 180,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art steel fabrication facility , one of the largest in the Pacific Northwest + Facility is AISC certified for high-rise, bridge, marine, and structural steel projects + Holds AISC Sophisticated Paint Endorsement (QP3 u2013 SPE) with extensive in-house coating experience + Swing shift availability is a priority + Day Shift: Mondayu2013Thursday, 6:00 AM u2013 4:30 PM + Swing Shift: 4:30 PM u2013 2:30 AM Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Tigard, OR.
