Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Office of Legal Affairsu2019 mission is to provide North Carolina Central University with the highest quality legal representation and to assist the University in its commitment to operating with integrity in full compliance with all applicable laws, regulations and policies. Primary Purpose of Position The primary purpose of the position is to assist the University attorneys with legally related matters. The Paralegal will perform legal work under the supervision of the attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs. The Paralegal will help to manage cases; prepare legal documents; research legal issues, respond to public record requests; analyze facts and documents; coordinate discovery processes; interview and coordinate witnesses; communicate with client(s), the public ,and others; organize and maintain case files; coordinate work with others; file documents in judicial and quasi-judicial venues, when necessary; and provide litigation support as deemed appropriate. In addition, the Paralegal will serve as a primary office contact for the University for all contract matters and public records requests, and under the supervision of the attorneys in the Office of Legal Affairs, be responsible for reviewing contracts submitted to the Office of Legal Affairs. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities + Thorough knowledge in preparing reports, contracts, and other types of correspondence. + Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form. + General knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices utilized in legal research and contracts. + General knowledge of the NC General Statutes, Rules of Civil Procedure, and contracts. + General knowledge of legal terminology, spelling, and grammar. + Comprehensive knowledge in operating standard office equipment and associated software (e.g. Lexis Nexis, Online NC General Statutes, etc.). Minimum Education/Experience Completion of an accredited paralegal program; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Accreditation may be from the American Bar Association or other recognized organization. Work Hours Monday - Friday 8-5 Position required to work during periods of adverse weather or other emergencies Yes Campus Security Authority Designated Position No Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies Required Competency Communication - Verbal/Written Duties + Assist attorneys with legal matters by drafting and reviewing contracts and agreements, supporting responses to public records requests, conducting legal research, maintaining case and contract files, and ensuring compliance with applicable laws, policies, and university procedures. + Ability to review and study case law, statutes, and legislation. Ability to identify primary and secondary legal authorities. Ability to Shepardize legal citations. Ability to locate, compare, and relate law and relevant information from various sources. Required Competency Administration Duties + Provide administrative support to the Office of Legal Affairs, including managing calendars, coordinating meetings, maintaining files and records, processing invoices, and serving as a point of contact for internal and external stakeholders. + Responsible for day-to-day management of the office, including office supplies and serving as office representative for any repairs or other maintenance needs. Required Competency Consulting/Advising Duties + Provide support and service to campus partners on a variety of matters involving the Office of Legal Affairs. + Serve on University committees as a OLA representative. + General knowledge of the principles, methods, and practices utilized in legal research and contracts. + Knowledgeable in preparing reports, contracts, and other types of correspondence. + Ability to communicate effectively with OLA staff and campus partners in oral and written form. Required Competency Technical Knowledge Duties + Comprehensive knowledge of computer skills, in operating standard office equipment, and the operation of associated and/or custom software.
