Postdoctoral Fellow

The Oregon National Primate Center (ONPRC) is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.Postdoctoral Position to study the novel mechanisms that regulate coronary microvascular function in health and disease using nonhuman primate models. This project is a collaborative effort between Dr. Kievit at ONPRC and Dr. Davidson at the Knight Cardiovascular Institute at OHSU. Studies will involve lab bench approaches to study banked adipose and cardiac tissues to study the reciprocal communication between the two organs. Future studies would involve in vivo and ex vivo imaging techniques to further investigate the role of obesity and diabetes in changes to cardiac function.Technical ResearchDaily collection of scientific data pertinent to the research projects that include in vivo (imaging) or ex vivo studies that involve molecular biological techniques (immunohistochemistry).Must use problem solving skills in support of studies.Data Analysis/ Record Keeping/manuscript writingMust keep accurate records of information obtained during research, analyze results, and produce weekly summaries to monitor potential problems with experimental upkeep (which may include database searches).Must be able to contribute to publications and present data in oral talks/poster sessions in national meetings.Other duties as required or assigned, to fulfill the mission of the laboratory.Successful candidates will have previous extensive experience in large animal models, with a focus on cardiometabolic health. Additional skills would include knowledge or first-hand experience with bench techniques like protein and RNA isolations, histology and advanced imaging techniques.Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences.Must think strategically and work accordingly producing effective results and working efficiently within the time constraints of the position.Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral formats.Ability to work independently and in small group settings.Ability to interact in a positive and productive manner and to work efficiently and skillfully with a variety of diverse staff.Ability to prioritize work demands and coordinate research protocols with other staff.Organizational skills and careful attention to details to satisfactorily complete and perform job duties.Large animal experience.Working ConditionsNormal work schedule will be from Monday to Friday.Hours are from approximately 9:00am - 5:00pm; however, early morning and evening work is occasionally required by scope of the position.Work is performed in both the laboratory setting with potential risk of exposure to potentially hazardous chemicals and dry ice and in areas where there is potential risk of exposure to zoonotic agents through injury, by direct contact with animal tissues and body fluids, or by contact with equipment contaminated by animals or their tissues and body fluids.Physical ConditionsAble to lift/move equipment/animals weighing up to 40 lbs.Ability to use computer keyboard.Ability to physically perform tasks involving handling, moving, or restraint of animals, collection of samples, administration of treatments, and other procedures (this may involve moving on wet and/or slick surfaces, through narrow corridors, between rows of cages).Oregon Health & Science University values a diverse and culturally competent workforce.
