Kettles VA Medical Center is seeking a Physician, aligned under Chief of Staff, at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System in Ann Arbor, MI to serve as the Assistant Chief of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Services. Responsibilities VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. Duties Include, but are not limited to: Serves as the Assistant Chief, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service (P&LMS) at the VA Ann Arbor Medical Center and as a CLIA license provider at the Dermatology Clinic for the Mohs program or other locations as per service needs. Responsible for assisting the Chief of P&LMS in all areas of P&LMS including clinical, administrative, education, and research. Responsible to the Chief of P&LMS Service and directly or indirectly assists in the supervision of the staff assigned to the service. Responsible for planning, developing, coordinating, directing, and evaluating the operational aspects of a large and complex laboratory program. In the hospital setting, participates in the day-to-day care of hospital patients by providing and interpreting laboratory information to help solve diagnostic problems and to monitor the effects of treatment. Interface with the clinical laboratories that include sections of urinalysis, coagulation, hematology, clinical chemistry, molecular, microbiology, immunology, point of care, and transfusion medicine. Works closely with peers in other service lines, services, and management to meet the needs of the medical center's recognized customer/patient groups. Responsible to ensure that all residency training program mandates are met and may serve as the site co-director. Knowledgeable of overall VA, VISN, and medical center goals, missions, and priorities to assure a positive impact on programs and resources. Works in concert with the Dermatology clinic and provides oversight for the Mohs compliance. Contributes to the operation of effective and safe laboratories that follow standards established by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), The Joint Commission (JC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB) and any other applicable inspecting agencies. Ensures accurate clinical laboratory test results with turn-around-times {TAT} that meet the reasonable and possible expectations of the medical staff and accrediting agencies, when adequately supported with necessary resources from facility administration and human resource management services. The performance of the clinical laboratory is monitored continuously and results recorded in the monthly Quality Assurance (QA) minutes. Ensures accurate anatomic pathology services (surgical pathology, cytology, and autopsy), with TATs that meet the reasonable and possible expectations of the medical staff and accrediting agencies when adequately supported with necessary resources from facility administration and human resource management services. TAT is monitored monthly and reported in the QA minutes. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting the Chief of P&LMS and the Medical Laboratory Directors. Promotes an effective, balanced relationship with academic affiliate(s) that results in a joint and mutually advantageous partnership. Ensures communication and coordination between the Medical Center laboratory services and the clinical/patient care services. Participates in the Laboratory Quality Improvement (QI) Plan in collaboration with the P&LMS Chief and VAAA QSV program, addressing appropriate and practical QI needs as indicated by accreditation, internal, and external sources. Call and Coverage expectations of the incumbent's assignment: The Staff Pathologists are on a rotation schedule to take call for Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. In addition, the Assistant Service Chief will always be available unless on personal leave or on annual leave, in the absence of the Chief of P&LMS. When the Assistant Chief is not available, he/she will appoint a designee to provide coverage. Pay: Competitive salary, annual performance bonus, regular salary increases Paid Time Off: 50-55 days of paid time off per year (26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year and possible 5 day paid absence for CME) Retirement: Traditional federal pension (5 years vesting) and federal 401K with up to 5% in contributions by VA Insurance: Federal health/vision/dental/term life/long-term care (many federal insurance programs can be carried into retirement) Licensure: 1 full and unrestricted license from any US State or territory CME: Possible $1,000 per year reimbursement (must be full-time with board certification) Malpractice: Free liability protection with tail coverage provided Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. All applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
