Location: Albany, NY Category: Civil Service Posted On: Wed Feb 25 2026 Job Description: Vacancy #: WF250267 Apply by: March 8, 2026 Title: Trades Specialist (Plumber/Steamfitter) Location: Plumbing Shop (Facilities Management) Salary: $50,425 Grade: CSEA SG-12 Hours: Monday thru Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM (pass days Saturday/Sunday) Duration: Contingent/Permanent Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications: Non-competitive: Four years of full-time experience in plumbing under a skilled tradesperson; which would provide training equivalent to that given in a training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program, OR an equivalent combination of experience and training gained by completion of technical courses in plumbing at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services; OR successful completion of the two-year Trades Specialist (Plumber & Steamfitter) traineeship or a two-year plumbing training, apprenticeship, or equivalent program such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship and Certificate Program. Operational needs: Experience in repairing, maintaining and installing plumbing fixtures and appliances such as sinks, shower baths, commodes, drinking fountains, dishwashers, valves including pneumatic controls, gas and water meters, gas hot water heaters and other gas appliances, heating systems and controls, and various steam equipment used in kitchens and machine rooms, water pumps and water system equipment. Ability to identify and discuss problems with users, visually inspect the fixtures or equipment, and use appropriate test equipment such as pressure and vacuum gauges to determine cause and location of trouble. Experience in following technical manuals, codes, and diagrams. Experience in planning work to make repairs and order replacement parts indicating quality and type and any other materials required. Experience in planning and laying out the installation, alteration, and repair of high- and low-pressure pipe systems that carry water, steam, air or other liquids or gases. Experience in new installations and alterations to existing installations. Experience in major repairs consistent with specifications, plans, and plumbing codes. Ability to assemble and install a variety of metal and nonmetal pipe and pipe fittings, joins piping by means of threaded, caulked, wiped, soldered, brazed, fused or cemented joints. Ability to test pipe system for leaks by filling with liquid or air and reading pressure gauges. May weld holding fixtures to steel members. Ability to assemble materials, tools, and equipment that are required to complete the work according to plans. Ability to supervise and instruct others in performing plumbing and steam fitting work by giving verbal instructions and/or demonstrating proper plumbing techniques and the use of plumbing and steam fitting tools and equipment. Ability to read blueprints, plans, and schematics.
