Distribution Design Engineer

Job Title: Distribution Design Engineer Job Description We are seeking experienced Distribution Designers or Engineers to join our team, supporting major utility companies. The ideal candidate will have over four years of experience in design, analysis, or fieldwork, with a preference for those who hold an engineering degree or an associate degree in design. This role involves developing design and construction work packages for electrical overhead and underground distribution systems, primarily overhead. Responsibilities + Develop independent design and construction work packages for electrical distribution systems. + Review client-provided work and assess scope requirements. + Conduct minimal fieldwork in specific locations, collecting photos and measurements. + Utilize Open Utilities and other industry-specific design software to complete designs. + Perform energy analysis to ensure material selection meets site requirements. + Build and maintain a Bill of Materials (BOM) in SAP/Material Tracking Software. + Assist in obtaining necessary permits for utility line installations. + Collaborate on quality control revisions before submitting the design package for client approval. + Communicate frequently with clients via email, phone, and teams. Essential Skills + Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Solidworks, Catia, Microstation, and Open Utilities. + Experience in power distribution design and engineering. + Familiarity with National Electric Safety Codes (NESC). + Ability to perform structural analysis using software like Poleforman or PLA/Pole Loading Analysis. Additional Skills & Qualifications + Experience in quality control or quality assurance work. + Experience in training new employees or writing process standards. + Internships or co-op experience with major utility companies is a plus. Work Environment Work is based in Michigan, with the option to work from home, local offices, or in the field. Initial training may require travel to the office for the first week or two. The role supports a growing Utility Energy Division, offering opportunities for professional growth and advancement. The department encourages ongoing education and preparation for FE and PE exams. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Grand Rapids, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $36.00/hr.
