Position Description DEFINITION:To provide classroom instruction regarding becoming a building inspector including lecture, demonstration, laboratory exercises, handouts, responding to questions, and testing. Students are experienced in one or more building trades and seek to pass this class to become a certified building inspector through the NC Department of Insurance (NCDOI)SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:Receives supervision from EWD Senior Director and/or Workforce Training CoordinatorExercises no supervision Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions) ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTION STATEMENT:Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:Provide classroom and laboratory instructionPrepare online/virtual lessons through CanvasPrepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop, and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessonsDevelop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scoresProvide classroom demonstrations on various equipment and machinery; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriateParticipate in curriculum development, evaluation, and change; attend faculty meetings as required.Work the number of hours scheduled by the Workforce Development DepartmentMaintain accurate records of student attendance, and performance; maintain other records and databases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.Stay abreast of new developments, and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars, and other continuing education programs as appropriateOversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching areaAs needed, attend trade association meetings and interact with employers.Other Important Functions:Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluateSelect various text books to be used for future classesPerform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned Qualifications QUALIFICATIONS:Knowledge of:Classroom and laboratory instructional techniques and proceduresNCDOI requirements to become a building inspector in various tradesPrinciples and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration in the area of assignmentCurrent trends, research, and development in the area of assignmentPrinciples and procedures of record keepingPrinciples and techniques involved in test development and administrationPertinent Federal, State, and local laws, codes, and regulationsAbility to:Interpret and apply college goals, objectives, policies, procedures, rules and regulationsInterpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, procedures, laws and regulationsCommunicate clearly, and concisely, both orally and in writingEstablish and maintain cooperative-working relationships with those contacted in the course of workMaintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for:Making observationsReading and writingCommunicating with othersOperating assigned equipmentHandling varied tasks simultaneouslyMaintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following:Standing or sitting for extended periods of timeOperating assigned equipmentPreparing and presenting instructional material.Bending, stooping, climbing or lifting up to 50 poundsMaintain mental capacity, which allows the capability of:Making sound decisionsResponding to questionsDemonstrating intellectual capabilitiesEXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINESAny combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. Required Education/Training, Experience, Skills:Minimum high school diplomaAt least 5 years’ experience in a trade (building, plumbing, electrical, and/or mechanical)At least 2 years’ experience as a building inspectorCertified Standard Certificate Instructor by the NCDOIExperience with technology for presentations, email correspondence. Preferred experience with online learning.
